Saskatoon, Saskatchewan The StarPhoenix LIFESTYLE B3 Tea drinkers deserve more consideration Monday, September 27, 1999 Dear Arizona: Thank you for the philosophical discourse. Keep reading for more on the subject: From West Point, That coffee drinker is living in the wrong part of the country. Down South, they bring you tea, coffee, water or any beverage you wish before your food is served. All through the meal, they come around with pitchers to refill your glass or cup. Its what we call Southern Hospitality.

Waco, Texas: While coffee drinkers have the option of regular or decaf, tea drinkers are rarely afforded the same courtesy. If I ask a server for decaffeinated tea, I am offered herbal teas, which I dont care for. I want the same (c) 1999 Creators Syndicate Inc. Dear Ann Landers: A reader recently asked why restaurants give free refills on coffee but charge extra for a second tea bag. 1 worked as a waitress for several years and this complaint is very familiar.

Actually, it doesnt make a lot of sense to me. I come from Germany, where you have to pay for every cup of coffee and every cup of tea. There are no free refills. I would like to tell that gentleman who complained, if you dont have any bigger problems than this in your life, you are very lucky. Enjoy the free coffee while it lasts before American restaurant owners get new ideas from Europe and start charging you for the coffee, too.

No Free ad sandwich. The waitress asked, And coffee? I replied, No, I would like a glass of milk. She looked at me and said, Milk? Whats the matter? You got ulcers? Gem of the Day (Credit Anonymous Homespun Philosopher in Atlanta): Strange how millions of people would love to live to be 1 10, but they dont know what to do with themselves when it rains on a Sunday afternoon. Tea requires hot water to brew properly. Second, the pot for water does not hold one full cup of tea. If you ask for a bigger pot, they give you one they use for coffee, which has a coffee taste. Third, some restaurants offer only flavoured teas that come in elegant boxes but have a peculiar taste. This is a source of extreme irritation.

All I want is plain tea, not some exotic perfumed herbal concoction that smells good but tastes like cologne. New York: I am originally from South Carolina, and although I love New York, it took me a while to become accustomed to the forthright manner New Yorkers have of expressing themselves especially the waitresses. When I stopped to get a quick sandwich for lunch one day, I ordered an egg sal but I want it decaffeinated especially at dinnertime. I hate having to drink plain water with a lovely meal. While I'm at it, why dont fast-food restaurants offer a variety of decaffeinated drinks? Im sure there would be plenty of orders for decaf colas from seniors, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Is anybody in the food business listening? Norfolk, I have a solution to the tea problem. My mother-in-law orders hot water and brings her own tea bags from home. When she wants a refill, she just reaches into her purse and asks for more hot water. Paris, Texas: I am 77 years old and have NEVER been given a second tea bag, only extra hot water. The managers say, Its our policy.

One day, I brought my own tea bag, and the restaurant charged me for the hot water! I thought it was outrageous. Water doesnt cost them anything. Glen Ellyn, 111 There are three Tea or Anything Else in Arizona brand of iced tea the restaurant serves, Masterson comfortable in that 70s groove By John McKay of The Canadian Press TORONTO Hes only 23, but Danny Masterson has always been a 70s kid at heart. Which may explain why he fits so comfortably into the role of Hyde, the teen conspiracy theorist who is absolutely convinced Xerox plans to take over the world, in That 70s Show. The Fox-Global retro-sitcom returns for a second prime-time season this fall.

The show airs on Global tonight and then moves to Tuesdays tomorrow on both Global and Fox for the start of the new season. Ive always been a fan of EARLY 70s clothes and music, before disco and before it got too crazy, Masterson says. Like grandfather shirts, bellbot-toms. Ive always liked having sideburns. Yeah, Ive got a little 70s groove of my own.

He says his favourite clothing from the era includes the tight, shortsleeve rock T-shirts. He even finds leisure suits pretty cool. Hes always been a fan of the Stones and Zeppelin. And with his frizzy hair, sideburns down to the jawbone, and a certain attitude, he does resemble a teen right out of the Age of Aquarius's leaner years. But there are two areas where he draws the line between the shows culture and his own personality.

He loves Hyde, but has far less inter- est in conspiracy scenarios than his small-screen counterpart. Its not that I do or dont agree with him, its just that I wouldnt bother putting that much significance on it to even go there. Why bother? He says Hydes funny, warped view of the world stems from a bad upbringing where he had to learn to do everything by himself as a kid. So some of the things his character believes in could be true, others are farfetched. I like to hear a good conspiracy, but I dont really spew them.

Then theres the shows infamous relationship with marijuana. There have been widespread debates about whether the series decision to play the issue for laughs was the morally correct one. After all, pot was a critical part of 70s culture and to ignore it, as Masterson says, would be akin to doing a story about the 1930s and not mentioning Prohibition. The young actor says the first episodes stoned sequence was among the shows funniest and word of mouth- about it definitely gave them an initial ratings boost. But Masterson says he wrestled with the issue of whether such scenes would appear to young viewers to be condoning pot smoking.

"I was nervous about it, but the truth of the matter is Im an actor and hired to do a part, play a character, he says, adding that people in the 70s really didnt have a grasp at the time of the long-term implications of dope smoking. "Im personally and this is not bullshit Im totally against drugs, I dont smoke pot. Im like one of the only people left, me and my little brother, who havent and dont do drugs. Meanwhile, the series title was not the first and seemed to emerge quite by accident. The original name was Teenage Wasteland, but the phrase was copyrighted (by The Who) and the owners refused to grant permission to use it, much less the tune it came from.

Pete Townsend wasn't our buddy, says Masterson. Then there was Feelin Alright, which he calls a weak-ass name. But through the shooting and testscreening of the pilot episode, everyone kept referring to the potential series as the 70s pilot or that 70s one and at the last minute the producers decided on That 70s Show, primarily as a joke. If the series proves to have legs, is the cast interested in sticking with it until it would have to move into the 1980s? I hope it doesnt go really, really long, Masterson says thoughtfully. Id like to go out sort of on an up.

Quote: The old rock T-shirts, which are kind of tight and the sleeves are short and they dont hang really low.And I think leisure suits are really kind of cool looking." on what he likes about 70s clothing. CP Danny Masterson, bottom right, is shown with fellow cast members of That 70s Show I see people with a million dollars doing a feature film and not a clue as to what theyre doing, he says, noting that he alway hangs out on the set and observes how everything works.

I think I can do a pretty good job. If I can, great. And if not, no one will know. I dont know about That 80s Show. I dont think Id like that name.

Besides, there already is a sitcom nipping at their heels with that thought in mind. Freaks and Geeks is a new fall series about high-school life circa 1980-81 which is already generating favourable buzz and is referred to unof ficially as That 80s Show. When asked his ambition, Masterson, who has actually been in showbiz for 19 of his 23 years (he began filming TV commercials when he was four), offers the actor's usual response. He wants to direct. Specifically, a short film project he has been toying with for some time.
