Bimieher'is racing on fast track to suecess 'If1: a nology Center's three years in the Automotive Technology Program where he received a Certificate of Completion in the Professional Development Program and became a certified automotive mechanic. His love for cars has led to full-time employment with Kenny Ross Chevrolet in Somerset. Although all 9,600 seats of the track were empty that day, Broucher demonstrated his driving skills by providing more than 100 exciting laps in excess of 100 mph. That was all that mattered when the checkered flag flew.

This determined young man drove with the skill and ability needed for him to demonstrate the same exciting and demanding performance he demands from himself in everyday racing and life experiences. If Hickory Motor Speedway is truly the "Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars," then this young man is hoping to return to his birthplace soon and begin a career utilizing the driving and mechanical experience and knowledge he has gained during his young SOMERSET It started out as another day at the races for 19-year-old Go-Kart racer Andrew Broucher from Somerset, sitting at the starting line wearing his helmet, gloves and racing shoes wait-, ing for the flag to drop to start the race. Broucher double checks his equipment as the anticipation wells up in him as he acknowledges the realization that he is not preparing to start racing a Go-Kart on a small town dirt track, but instead has been afforded the opportunity with this start to experience his dream of driving a NASCAR Craftsman Truck at the World's Most Famous Short Track, Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Broucher's dream opportunity has been made possible by the Lafferty Motorsports Driver Development Program. The program is designed to provide an outlet or opportunity for potential drivers to make it in racing, while empowering drivers to be well-rounded in driving, speaking and marketing skills and hav ing an overall understanding of the "Business of Racing" as well as have them perform behind the wheel.

Chris-Lafferty team owner and crew chief for the NASCAR truck sponsored by Red Line Synthetic Oil provided Broucher with instruction and an evaluation which included walking and driving around the high-banked, 'A-mile with short straight -aways track to get familiar with and allow him to set up the driving baseline. When the flag drops, Broucher quickly hears and feels the power of the truck he is driving, 650 horsepower pushing to more than 100 mph, quite a difference to his Mongoose Go-Kart of 7000 rpm, never able to exceed 65 mph, even on a good day. But Broucher handles the truck at the high speed for more than 100 laps, and gains experience using a head phone communication set to obtain instruction from Lafferty for his drive. After completing his drive, Lafferty reviewed with Broucher his results of the drive and Lafferty Motors- first year, 30 first place trophies his second year, 26 feature wins including Thunder Canyon Raceway in Fairmont, W.Va., and two track championships at Acme Motor Speedway. Other accomplishments include: Certificate of Completions for BeaveRun Mo-torSports Complex Karting School; achievement for Bertil Roos Racing School 12 Day Road Racing; acceptance for NASCAR Technical Institute; and completion for Jenner-stown Speedway the Thunder on the Mountain Driving Experience.

In addition to his consistent driving skill, Broucher makes many friends at the track where he spends his time to mentor younger drivers. He attends Happy Valley Baptist Church in Somerset where he is a member of the choir, youth group and home visiting team. The young race driver increased his knowledge and mechanical skills of working on the carts with skills he gained in high school from the Somerset County Tech NASCAR Chase format now By MIKE HARRIS AP Auto Racing Writer Submitted photo Andrew Broucher ports expectations of drivers if chosen, reviewing the key factors Lafferty Motorsports is looking for in a driver and reviewing Broucher's experience in these areas. Some would like to see the 12 drivers in the 10-race Chase have a completely separate points structure that would keep one or two bad finishes from knocking them out of title contention. Others insist that each of the eligible drivers be given a "mulligan," allowing them to throw out their worst Chase finish. Still others believe moving the "wild card" Talladega race out of the Chase would make it more fair and possibly more competitive. But should the domination of Johnson and his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team be a catalyst for change in the 5-year-old playoff format? Dale Earnhardt Jr.

has been in the Chase three times and has yet to remain in contention to the end. With two races re- maining, he is well out of the title picture in 11th. Even so, Earnhardt said it's just too soon to contemplate "How do we understand what to change and how to make it better if we can't watch it and look at it for seven years or eight years and see how it's working and really get a good look at how it is working and not working?" Earnhardt said. "How can we really know what to change and make the right change? Fill in the blank spaces in the grid so that every row and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9, without repeating any. There is only one solution to each puzzle.
