306-08-10 So. Fourth Street. Opposite Market Square phone No. 8. Br WINTER EVERETT The "progressive" leaders in Madison are planning to give a good deal of attention to the western Part of the state.

A "nmcroooWo" of Mr. Hull. They seemingly, however, fear a break with Mr. Withrow and against their better political judgment will permit him to remain unopposed. There is only a slight chance that any "progressive" will come into the field for the primary contest and make the run or permit his name to be passed upon in an elimination contest for the "progressive" endorsement.

Beck Interested Joseph D. Beck, whom the "progressive" leadership pulled out of the seventh district congressional seat for the gubernatorial run of 1928 has not hesitated to tell the "progressive" leadership that he believes he should be returned to congress. He does not at all like the plan of the "progressive" leaders in Madison to allow Mr. Withrow a free reign. It is even possible that he will jump the traces and be a candidate for the congressional nomination no matter how such a step might be disliked by the Madison contingent.

Unless Mr. Beck can be convinced that the good of the "progressive" cause demands that he remain in the background, the Madison may consider It necessary to call an elimination conference. Mr. Withrow would not accent such a. nlan with a in the field against Judge Chester A.

Fowler whom Gov. Kohler appointed to the bench last spring. In his letter to members of the legislature Mr. Renolds says that if. he.

Mauthe of the conservation commission will make a trip through the western counties of the state in the near future to see how much of the present hunting grounds in that part of the state are being closed to hunters. Mr. Mauthe is strong In his demands that the marshes and other gathering places of wild game be open to the public.

He is opposed to the private preserve idea with territory upon which only wealthy men having paid for the privilege can shoot. Private hunting preserves are not at all favored by Mr. Mauthe and if ho finds there are any tracts of marsh, non-agricultural land or land from which general hunting is barred because of private ownership he will recommend to the conservation commission these tracts be declared bird refuges upon which no man can hunt. Mr. Mauthe during his trip will give attention to the Trempealeau marsh situation which is now in the courts because of the efforts of a company to bar people from hunting on marsh territory which they claim they are segregating for fur farm usage.

Reis. 0F FREIGHTER WITH L0SSJ1FTIVE LIVES Conflicting Stories of Disaster on Upper Michigan Lake Shore are Probed W5) An Investigation into the wreck of the freighter Kiowa with loss of five Uvea was under way in this little upper Michigan village Wednesday. Captain John Hanson of the federal steamboat inspection service, sought in his hearing to reconcile conflicting stories of the disaster. By one group of the 16 survivors cere he was told the boat actually did not sink" but merely grounded la shallow water. Others insisted that, pounded by lashing waves, she uirped down until only her pilot house remained above water.

JTrom an injured fireman In a Munislng hospital, came a new story and added details of how Captain Alex Young or Duluth and four others sacrificed their lives in an effort to bring help. Carl Gust said that 11 men left the Kiowa Sunday morning, 12 hours after she went aground near Au Sable lighthouse on an isolated Shore 150 miles west of theSoo. As they lowered the lifeboat, a cable snapped and all were pitched Into the ice water. Young and four others went down. A wheelsman.

Max Westerderg, crawled back into the craft and was swept out to sea. It was the finding of his body which eventually led to a search for the rescue of the 18 survivors. Six men. Gust said, managed to get tack aboard the Kiowa and all huddled there until taken oft by a breeches buoy. FA RMERS FETED AT BUSINESS MEN'S great deal of fervor.

The Madison leadership tried to play with this candidacy as they did two years ago. Friends of Harry Mortenson of New Lisbon received the hint that If Mortenson desired to run he could expect aid from the lieutenants of the "progressive" faith In the district. The Madison "progressive" leadership suggested a conference.

Mr. Mortenson, with memories of the meeting of two years ago when practically through the dictation of the Madison ring Withrow was finally endorsed after Borne of the delegates to the conference, wearied from long ballotting, had gone home, refused to be responsive to the suggestion. Friends of Mr. Mortenson say he will support Congressman Merlin Hull for a renominatlon. Mr.

Withrow has claimed right along that he was to be accorded a second opportunity to contend for the seventh district nomination. His statements have been accepted at La Crosse where his candidacy has been accepted as a 'certainty for some time. Apparently the Madison "progressive" leadership has decided to allow Mr. Withrow a clear field. The "progressive" leaders would prefer another candidate than Mr.
