Salyadoran civilian and military sources said about 50 guerrillas attacked El Triunfo, 120 kilometres east of the capital, and occupied the town of 5,000 inhabitants after hours'of fighting Thursday El Salvador's Independence Day. Military sources said seven soldiers-were killed in the battle. There were no reports of guerrilla casualties. Fighting raged Thursday evening around Jucuapa and Chinameca, southwest of El Triunfo, as rebels attacked those towns also.

Sixteen kilometres from El Triunfo, Magana spoke at the dedication of a new hydroelectric plant. He sad. negotiations with the rebels that would lead to a pre-election snaring of power was "the one thing, definitely the one thing, my government cannot do for peace." In another development in the region, Costa Rica, which does not have an army, announced Thursday it was installing anti-aircraft machine-guns to protect airports and other key facilities as a "precaution" against possible attacks by groups involved in the Nicaragu-an conflict. Meanwhile, Costa Rican-based Nicaraguan rebels said they fought with troops of Nicaragua's leftist Sandinista government in southern Nicaragua, knocking government artillery out of commission and inflicting an unspecified number of casualties. Also, Angel Edmundo Solano, Costa Rican public security minister, said members of the Spanish Basque guerrilla organization ETA were being held for questioning in an alleged plot to kill Nicaraguan rebels based in Costa Rica.

It was not immediately clear why ETA, which seeks the separation of the Basque region from the rest of Spain, would be involved In the alleged plot. U.S. bill approves nerve gas .14 (CoeftaeMt WANTED. Old lukeboxes 4 7 rpm rock roll records. Ron.

Sent- With Special Core Flowers Canada SASKATCHEWAN REGION Program tries to discredit Walesa WARSAW (Reuter) Poland's Communist rulers have renewed their 20-month-old campaign to discredit former Solidarity leader Lech Walesa with a special television program Thursday highlighting his most aggressive statements during the union's 16 months' sway. The prime-time evening broadcast showed Walesa at the union's 1981 congress calling the Soviet Union "provocative" and saying Solidarity now banned would be ready "if uninvited guests" entered Poland. Contacted by telephone at his home in Gdansk, Walesa said before the broadcast that he planned to watch it. "Naturally they will be spitting at me again; I'd be surprised if they started praising me.

But they'll probably bungle it again and it'll be a smashing victory for me," Walesa said. The broadcast interspersed Walesa's tough statements from the Solidarity period with his calls for dialogue at a meeting with Deputy Premier Mieczyslaw Rakowski at the Gdansk shipyard last month.
