One of these new additions, Robert Thaler, formerly of the short-lived series "The Renegades," was chosen in a typically roundabout fashion. "When I originally went to the coast," said Thaler, "I thought it would be for only a couple of weeksThen I met Henry Winkler.

He had a strong theater background and so did I. I'd never worked in front of the cameras, but he recommended me to the producers of 'The and I decided to stick around." Although "THe Renegades" went off the air after eight episodes and Thaler was unemployed, he went back to live theater, traveling around doing regional work, with a mind to returning to TV or film work. When a "Santa Barbara" casting agent saw him in a play, it turned out to be the break he needed. "While doing a soap can be real drudgery," said Thaler, "fortunately, the people at the top are fantastic, creative, and understanding, willing to give the actors leeway when it comes to sticking to the script." At least "Santa Barbara" is trying to be. different from other soaps.

Thaler's offbeat role, that of Pearl the oyster shucker from a wealthy Boston family, reeks with potential. i "Pearl is a Renaissance man," said Thaler. "I'm never quite sure what he's capable of doing. He's always coming up with new talents which no one knew he had. One thing's sure, though this, isn't your standard oyster shucker." Thaler has many other interests besides acting, among them are up his remote Laurel Canyon (California) house.

Thaler does his own remodeling, and recently completed a hot tub with views of Los Angeles. However, that's only temporary, as he enjoys a more country lifestyle, and would like to move out of the city in the not too distant future. "I'm a super private person," said Thaler. "When I'm home I don't want to be able to see my neighbors. I don't like crowds.

When I visited Kauai this year, it was so infested with people that I backpacked way back to Waimea Canyon. It was worth it, because I'd be hard pressed to find another more beautiful place anywhere. It was so lush and green. Robert Thaler appears to have a practical head on his shoulders. His storyline on "Santa Barbara" in the jungle after escaping from the hacienda, and Jeremy is unsuccessful in his attempts to find her.

Everyone goes to Al's funeral in El Paso on "One Life to Live." Cassie figures out that Mitch is trying to drug her into becoming his slave. Tina goes back and forth between Cord and Richard. The McCleary brothers band together on "Search for Tomorrow." Lloyd is afraid that Estelle has poisoned him. Suzi asks Cagney to leave the force. 1986 King Features Syndicate Inc.

PLOT PORTENTS Cass can find few people who believe his story about the kidnapping on "Another World." Cecile tries to sabotage Cass's efforts to win back Kathleen. Peter stops Brittany's plan to leave Rick learns that Frank is the target of his assassination on "Ryan's Hope." Maggie invited Fantasy, Slobhan and Max all together for an awkward lunch. Frank asks Diana out to dinner. Palmer goes to the cruise ship with the intention of marrying Daisy, but complications arise on "All My Children." Erica is lost Peter Love joins the cast of "Ryan's Hope" this week. Love plays Marc D'Angelo, a college newspaper editor who hires the pretty Ryan Hyde to work at his publication.

Look for love to blossom between the two as Rick also tries to win back Ryan's heart. As the World Turns" will pay tribute to the late Don MacLaughlin in honor of his 30-year run as Chris Hughes on the show. MacLaughlin who passed away last May, will be remembered in a series of flashbacks airing the week of July 21. The show's storyline will also recognize the death of Chris Hughes, giving both character and actor a fond farewell. has been expanding, so we'll be seeing more of him in the future.

CHANNEL CHATTER Another handsome hunk is part of the cast of "Another World." He's Hank Cheyne, a lawyer turned model who is now an actor. Hank, who plays the newly arrived musicianbeach bum named Scott, originally intended to become a lawyer as he attended UCLA Law School. However, a friend suggested he try modeling, and it led to a rewarding career both financially and travel-wise. Now, after a few acting jobs under his belt, Cheyne will try the daily grind on a soap opera, and looks forward to making his mark on "Another World."
