This headed walking cane was once the possession of the man in the picture, Cornelius Ennis, early Texas railroad man and publisher. Ennis received the cane in 1948 and it can now be seen at City Hall. (Sun Staff Photo) Ennis Named for a Man Who Never Visited There the Council Room at the Ennis City Hall is glass case which holds a gold-headed walking cane bearing the inscription The original owner of the cane did not leave it in Ennis while passing through. In fact, there is not even any records which show that Cornelius Ennis ever visited the town that still bears his name. The existence of the cane itself was unknown until 1948.

Then when the Dallas News was moving into its new building, a thorough cleaning of the old office uncovered the cane, which was then presented to Ennis. Though Cornelius Ennis never lived in Ennis, the choice of his name for the town seemed not only appropriate but prophetic. Ennis was one of the incorporators and directors of the Great Northern Railroad and also the Texas Central Railroad which once had Ennis as its terminus. The railroad heritage in Ennis is thus old and honored. Even today a large number of Ennis citizens are employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad and either of two railroad construction companies.

Today, Ennis, a town with a railroad heritage is looking toward a railroad future. In a recent action, the Ennis City Council voted to permit trains to travel at speeds up to 55 miles per hour in an attempt to encourage Amtrack passenger trains travelling between Dallas and Houston to use Ennis as a depot. Ennis Youth Fair Plans Under Way planning committee for the Ennis Annual Youth Fair for FFA and 4-H clubs met Thursday to lay groundwork for this fair on March 27. H.J. Howell, chairman of the committee says that, the major development was a few minor changes in rules and regulations designed to make this fair an even better show.

He declined to elaborate on the changes, saying that they were so minor that they would not effect participants to any great extent. Several other committee chairmen were also named at this first meeting. Ocie R. Gerron was named co-chairman of the group. Also, Bernard Mask has been selected to be publicity chairman.

The Youth Fair is sponsored by and through the Ennis Chamber of Commerce, and each year the fair produces around $2300 in prize money. The fair will be held this year, as in past at the Ennis Auction Company on East Highway 34. SUBSCRIBE TO TOSUBSCRIBE: WRITE CORSICANA SUN P.O. 622 CORSICANA OR CALL COLLECT 872-2551..
