36 the STAR-PHOEN'IX, Saskatoon, Monday, August 28, 1978 Andrea McArdle. copes well with child stardom typical teen-ager By Marilyn Beck lulled features Syndicate HOLLYWOOD Tatum 'O'Neal and Andrea McArdle were both born on Nov. 5. 1963. And there the similarity between the two juvenile stars begins and ends.

her and how sad it was the way child stars used to be treated. She knew about the diet pills that were fed to Judy so she would look her best before the cameras, her breasts being bound, her hair styled in pigtails so the studio could continue to sell her to the world as a pre-teen. But, said Andrea, such things couldn't happen today even if there weren't laws protecting minors. "Kids have changed," she pointed out. "They used to be afraid to complain, to criticize.

But now, well, now it's okay to speak out, to tell people when you don't Hke something." Has she had occasion to complain? "No so far because everything's been just fine. But it wasn't, I'd tell them so. No kidding, I really would." Z. Cooper weren't directing it. Because Cooper, a former child star who grew up on the soundstages with Judy (and who is portrayed in the film by teen-age actor Johnny Doran) knows how to handle young performers.

And he does it with patience and understanding. He illustrated that point when Andrea returned to the cameras, and Cooper told her gently: "Darling you're Judy now and your parents are splitting up. You feel terrible because your mother is taking you to Hollywood and you don't want to go. You're not going to see your daddy any more. Can you feel all that, honey?" Andrea felt and moved through the scene with ease.

When it was concluded and she returned to the sidelines, she talked of how the Judy Garland story was affecting dancing lessons at age 7. Spotted at a Philadelphia studio by an agent, she was soon doing TV commercials and, at the age of 11, became a member of the Search for Tomorrow soap opera cast. Working on the soap opera was Andrea informed me when she took her next camera break, but nothing like the fun she was having making the Ten Four Productions' Rainbow in which she sings a dozen Garland songs. "It's a lot different making a TV movie than it is doing a play or a soap opera," she explained. "There's so much rehearsal, and a lot of time is taken up worrying about angles and lights and things like that.

But it's never boring." It also hasn't been as difficult an experience for her as it might have been if Jackie constant contact with young professionals more experienced than she in adult ways and habits? "I'm not worried," Phillis McArdle said. "My daughter has the ability to know how to handle herself in any situation. When she was nine she had the common sense of a 15-year-old. She's shy, but she also has self-confidence and sensible values. And she hates phonies." McArdle admitted that both she and her husband had their reservations when Andrea first broke into the business several years ago.

"I guess you always worry, 'How will they turn out? Will she end up marrying at age But we know better The McArdles never dreamed their daughter would end up in show business when she started taking who's still embarrassed by many things. She even undresses behind a screen." Certainly Andrea has had her fair share of exposure to glamor in the two years since she's found fame as Annie. Such notables as Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney and Henry Winkler have made backstage pilgrimages to heap compliments upon her. Barry Manilow presented her with a beagle puppy, which has become one of her proudest possessions. And, in her one previous Hollywood film experience when she guested on a segment of ABC's Welcome Back, Kotter she had the chance to get to know John Travolta, whom she now regards as: "My favorite, My real-l-Iy favorite!" Yet, because Andrea's life has not revolved entirely around show business, because she's commuted from BOBBY GOLDSBORO has a rather frank philosophy on commercialism in music.

Andrea, who burst into prominence as Broadway's Annie, objects to the use of obscenities, has been raised in the Philadelphia suburb of Cheltenham by a cost-analyst father and medical-assistant mother who have been married for 18 years. She attends church every Sunday, has received the bulk of her education at parochial schools. And at age 14, still acts refreshingly like a kid. On the Hollywood sound-stage where Andrea was portraying a young Judy Garland for NBC's upcoming Rainbow TV movie based on the late star's bittersweet life, she spoke about her future. She won't be making any movies of a sexual bent, she said.

But when I asked her why, she seemed a bit flustered, shrugged and wrinkled her nose when she responded, "I just I don't think it would be right for me. I'm not criticizing Brooke Shields. She did a good job in Pretty Baby but I don't think it needed all that sex." When she trotted back to the camera, her mother explained: "It's just that Andrea's not ready for that sort of thing yet and I hope she won't be for quite a while. She's a typical teen-ager "To me, being commercial is appealing to the masses. If you write a song that millions of people can relate to.

what in the hell is wrong with being commercial? There will be some who associate Goldsboro with a teeny-bopper image but basically, his winning songs have been ones which reflect a growing-up period, a maturing within his own family, and some inspirations drawn from outside of his own experiences. (AP) -Charles Boyer, the French-born actor known for his 1930s and 1940s film roles as a romantic lover, died Saturday, two days after the death of his wife of 44 years. He was 78. There were signs of a previous heart disease, said Dr. Thomas Jarvis, Maricopa County coroner, after performing an autopsy Sunday, and blood samples were to be sent to a toxicology laboratory for examination today.

"This is to determine whether he might have overdosed on a drug," said Jarvis, adding: "There is no evidence of that but we'll double-check." Doctors had suspected a heart attack as the cause of Boyer's death. Boyer's wife, the former Patricia' Patterson, died Thursday at age 68. She had been an actress in England. The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday that Boyer's wife died of cancer and was buried in a Los Angeles cemetery. Boyer was found unconscious about 10 a.m.

He was taken to the heart centre at St. Joseph's Hospital by paramedics. "Still unconscious, he arrived at the hospital at 10:35 'and was pronounced dead at 10:53," said Jan Tangdelius, hospital -information officer.

"The doctors feel there's little doubt that it was a heart attack." As an actor. Boyer epitomized the continental lover.
