To the City of Saskatoon, it means hundreds of thousands of dollars; annually and for this reason, an experiment will probably be conducted this year to see if a savings can be made. Works and utilities director Jim Beveridge said Wednesday the city spends more than $200,000 a year for chemicals to remove the hardness from water pumped into Saskatoon homes. In addition to this, there is also the cost of labor. The City of Regina does not soften its water, but about 70 per cent of its residents lease water-softening equipment. In Saskatoon, about seven per cent of the residents use the equipment.

Beveridge said the water running through city taps, after treatment, contains 95 to 100 parts per million (ppm) of hardness. treatment, the hardness ranges between 150 to 180 parts per million. Basically, the softer the water, the easier it is to make soap lather. Also, hard water has a tendency to leave a ring-around-the-bathtub. In Regina, the hardness runs about 300 parts per million, Beveridge said.

The director said that later this summer, city council will probably be approached with a proposal to undertake a one-or two-month trial period when there would be no water-softening carried out. The purpose of the program will be to determine public reaction to the change -whatever it might be. "We want to see what the difference would be," Beveridge said. "It's on the borderline whether we need to soften or not. It's worth discussing and testing." However, Beveridge said he is not interested in transferring the treatment cost from the city to the public.

-there is no question the city would save money." If a harder water ran through Saskatoon homes, it would mean more people would be leasing private equipment, which runs about $6.50 a month. While the city has been softening water for about 30 years, some changes resulted from the creation of Lake Diefenbaker in the The lake has evened out the hardnessof the water overthe year.
