By TOM B. TURBIVILLE The Southwestern Conference race has come to a painful finish for four of the six participating schools, with Lamar High Schhoi ending a distant second, but gaining a spot in the Mustang Cup playoffs, by virtue of a two-point edge over Irving in the final standings. But it was MacArthur High School who took early command of the race, and weaken, as the Cards finished the loop campaign with a spotless 10-0-0 reading and a strong roll in the upcoming playoffs. Both Lamar and Irving High finished at 6-4-0, but on the Southwestern point distribution set-up, the Vikes gain the additional berth with 58 FINAL STANDINGS points, to 56. JV squad finished fourth at 5-5-0, with Arlington fifth at 3-7-0, and Sam Houston last without a win in their 10-game sprint.

The varsity Cardinals will face W.T. White High School in their first playoff game on Monday, while Lamar will take on North Dallas. The Mac-White contest will be played at J.O. Davis Field at 7 p.m. On Thursday, the Cards will meet Richardson Pearce at J.O.

Davis at 6:30 p.m., while Lamar meets bouth Garland on Wednesday. Then on Saturday, the Cards go to Central Park in Garland for a match with North Garland. Team standings after the first week of playoffs will determine wheather the team advances to the quarterfinals on April 10. On Saturday, April 13, the semi-finals will be played, with the finals of the Mustang Cup coming on April 27, at Texas Stadium, preceding the Dallas Tornado-St. Louis Stars pro game.

Mac will have the work cut out for them, especially in the North Garland game. The North Garland team is yet to be scored on this year. Mac has been scored on only nine times, having scored 59 goals against opponents.
