Monday, November 27, 1978 Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Star-Phoenix Anonymous graves await many victims DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (AP) Anonymous graves or cremation may await many of more than 912 Americans who followed Rev. Jim Jones to their deaths in Guyana, government officials say, The a air force finished bringing all the decomposed bodies back to their homeland Sunday. However, after four days of work FBI and military experts have positively identified only 25 of the 512 bodies they had fingerprinted. Washington, Jeff Deterich, a state department spokesman, said the U.S.

government has not decided whether to cremate unclaimed bodies. He added: "Eventually, if a large number of unclaimed bodies remain in Dover, it may well be we will be forced to consider that possibility." The of Jones, leader of the Peoples Temple who led his followers into a suicidal death rite at. the cult's commune in Guyana, was one of the first identified by FBI fingerprint experts. In Richmond, a funeral director said Jones' in-' laws wanted his body and that of his wife and two of their children cremated, and their ashes scattered' into the Atlantic Ocean. The state department said no arrangements have been made to dispose of Jones' body.

Meanwhile, the FBI said it planned to examine closely today a letter an airman found on Jones' body here Friday. FBI spokesman Tom Coll said the note has been read, but its contents will not be immediately released because it may eventually be used for evidence. Coll said the note is being disinfected in an FBI Star Phoenix Printed and published daily except Sundays and statutory holidays by Armadale Publishers Limited at the office of the STAR-PHOENIX, 204 Fifth Avenue North, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, S7K 2P1. "We have not established as yet that it is in his handwriting and we have not said it was a suicide note," coll said. The estimated 260 children who swallowed or were fed a poisoned drink at the Jonestown settlement on Nov. 18 will be the hardest to identify, the experts agreed. It took nine flights and three days to complete the airlift of 912 bodies aboard C-141 cargo planes.

On the last three flights, some coffins bore the bodies of two or more children. One mortuary worker said the bodies, which baked in the tropical heat for nearly a week, were so decayed that only the morticians could tell their gender. "It's just an unintelligible mess," said Airman Curtis Bongavoglia, of Miller Place, N.Y. "You can't tell white or black. You can't tell the facial features at all." Bongavoglia, a jet mechanic who volunteered tow work in the mortuary, gave this description of how he braced himself to opening the stench-filled coffins and body bags: "You just have to psyche yourself into not thinking about it as a person, but just as something that's broken down.

If you start thinking about it as a person, you get yourself mentally involved and that's no good." Larry Layton, 32, of San Francisco and Charles Beikman, 43, of Indianapolis are under arrest and police sources said more arrests are expected soon, Embassy officials said the Guyanese government will not permit possible suspects or material witnesses to leave the country. But a state department spokesman in Washington said the survivors were expected to begin returning Tuesday. The survivors were to be flown to the Charleston, S.C., Air Force Base where dozens of FBI agents were waiting to question them and arrest anyone who might have had a part in the Ryan killing. Charles Devic, chief of the FBI's Charleston office, said his agents will try to "identify the murderers and conspirators to the (Ryan) murder." The murder of a congressman is a federal crime no matter where it occurs and anyone involved in it can be charged with conspiracy.

Several of the survivors said Sunday that Jones had considered moving his sect to the Soviet Union and had lectured members of the settlement on the virtues of Soviet communism. A memo from aides to Jones told of meetings with the Soviet press attache in Georgetown, Feodor Timofeyev, in which they explored the possibility of an exodus to the Soviet Union.
