N.Y. 10166. 0 1M2 Computog By Connie Passalacqua In the soap world it is not unusual for an actress to create a strong role, and for other actresses to succeed her in that role when she takes off for the greener pastures of nighttime TV and films. Once in a great while, the actress returns to resume her role. That's exactly what Kate Mulgrew, who originated the part of Mary Ryan Fenelli on "Ryan's Hope," will do this fall even though three years ago Mary met her death in a fiery car crash.

The scenes that Miss Mulgrew taped late this summer are fantasy scenes those of her still-grieving husband Jack (played then and now by Michael Levin). 'l come back in Jack's conscience," explains Miss Mulgrew. "I give him permission to go on with his life." Miss Mulgrew's brief return to daytime is a special event not only because of the fame she has gained since leaving "Ryan's Hope." but because her portrayal of the fierce, independent Mary Ryan was so good that none of the succeeding actresses to play the role could obliterate the memory of her talents. "Kate was Mary Ryan." says Claire Labine, co-creator and co-headwriter of "Ryan's Hope," to whom Kate bears a startling physical resemblance. "We tried to make it work with the other actresses, but in the end, we (she and then co-writer Paul Mayer) decided we had to kill her off." Mrs.

Labine and Miss Mulgrew remain close personal' friends and this may have been one reason for the tatter's brief return. Since leaving "Ryan's Hope" Miss Mulgrew says "I've had great luck. I had no idea of what I would do when I left the show. It was a leap of great faith." Faith paid off. Almost immediately she landed the title role in a prime-time series, "Mrs.

Colombo," and played Mother Seton in an ABC Theater presentation of "A Time for Miracles." She also starred in the mini-series "The Manions of America" and appeared in the theatrical film "A Stranger Is Waiting."
