WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 1948 THE ESCANABA (MICH.) DAILY PRESS PAGE THREE LAW REQUIRES MILK COOLING Dairy Farmers Urged To Use Proper Methods Proper cooling of milk and cream is important to dairy farmers, for they can save losses to themselves and assure a higher quality milk reaching the market, according to J. L. Heirman, Delta county agricultural agent. Air cooling of milk is a poor method at any time of the year, and is very ineffective during the warm nights of spring and summer, the agent pointed out. Consequently, considerable warm milk may be rejected by inspectors during the first warm days of spring, beeause some producers have not started placing their milk cans in tanks of cold water lor proper cooling before milk delivery.

Recently all Michigan dairy plants were warned by letter from the state department of agriculture not to accept milk that was not properly cooled. Starting April 1 all the agriculture inspectors be- checking on the quality and temperature of milk received at plants throughout the state, and they will reject milk that does not meet the GO degree temperature standard set by law. The farmer can save losses for himself by properly cooling the milk before the first real warm weather arrives. The quality of the milk will improve and the dairy industry of the state as a whole will benefit. Dairy farmers who have milk cooling problems are invited to discuss them with County Agent Heirman.

That cuts down evaporation, keeps the soil in place in spite of heavy winds. The Graham- Hoeme Plowing Method with the two-inch chisel, shown in illustration, permits water to by-pass the top soil into the sub-soil. It's a moisture storage center. MR. But, after the first few minutes ui rain a smooth surface seals itself, causing run-off It has been scientifically proven that the same field will NOT seal itself when plowed with the Graham- I loeme All Purpose Plow with a 2-inch chisel furrow every 12 inches. This method by-passea the rainfall through the top soil and keeps a straw mulch on TOP. Upwards of thres times the moisture enters the ground. If the next day is fair and hot, the bare soil would soon be steaming and losing its moisture rapidly.

BUT NOT IF THAT GROUND IS COVERED. The Graham- Hoeroe Plow leaves vegetation on top to shade and protect, and moisture stays in soil longer to bridge between rains. These are not just opinions, but proven facts. A covered corrugated field in a good, brisk rain, will absorb 200 per cent more moisture than a bare field and 60 per cent more than a field with vegetable matter plowed into the surface. To supply this covering for the toil without the expense of artificial cover, and to place the soil in a condition to by-pass the moisture through the top soil is the purpose and achievement of the Graham-Hoexne Plow.
