The corporations are involved in 4-H mainly because of enlightened self-interest but also feel a definite responsibility to farm youth.

Its important that the two groups "get into direct contact, he said. Promotion of the 4-H total program has been a problem for the club executives, Croteau said. Its no longer all cows and cooking. Public concepts have not been keeping up with the development of the organization. We are more of a total personal development group he said.

The 4-H program is aligned with the department of agriculture, extension division, the federal department of agriculture, and operates its main office out of the University of Saskatchewan, Thoen said. Other posts filled at the meeting include the election of Hugh Bullerwell.CutKnife, first vice-president; Doris Pool, Naieam, second vice-president; Beatrice Magee, Carmichael, secretary and Olive Goldsmith Carnduff, treasurer. made in the last two years are amazing. No other 4-H club in Canada has a camp as well equipped and run as the one at Camp Rayner. Usually 4-H clubs are run by the full-time staff of the organization aid this usually means a great deal of paternalism.

Volunteer-based, grassroots levels of organization should be followed by the rest of the country, Lithgow said. The Manitoba club followed Saskatchewans lead and joined the national organization last week, he said. Thoen was the first volunteer leader to sit and vote on the national board in its 40-year history. The board is comprised of about 82 corporate agribusiness members, including major implement manufacturers and grain handlers representing 50 of the largest corporations in Canada, he said. Its important that the volunteer clubs get a say in the development of the national program of exchange trips, conferences and help provide a forum of cooperation between the now autonomous, separate provincial groups, Lithgow said.

Provincial participation allows the research and experience of one club to be passed on to others, something that is not easily done now, he said. rx MR CIXUMifVV) VT Announcina arnmnss Announcina MSMMS3 AUUOOnCIIiG EVERY MONDAY, JUNE 19 TO SEPTEMBER 4, 1978 Expansion of Camp Rayner, the 4-H facility on Lake Diefenbaker, was announced at the 60th annual meeting of the Saskatchewan 4-H Council in Saskatoon during the weekend. The camp will become a year-round facility next year, and a multi-purpose building will be added, out-going president Jack Croteau of Pennant, said Saturday. The former administration building front the municipality of Cutbank was purchased for $4,000, and will be moved to the Camp Rayner site as soon as possible to be converted into a winter facility. It is suitable for offices, seminars and accomodation as well as for recreational meetings, Croteau said.

Croteau has stepped down as president to become ad- ministrator of the camp, a full-time position. There was some concern the club would not be able to continue its intermediate camp for 13 and 14 year olds because the University of Saskatchewan, one of three main supporting continue its grant for summer staff, he said. But, the problem was worked out and the university will continue with support of $5,000 this year to allow time to find another contributor, he said. The 27 official delegates and 140 members attending the meeting decided to retain membership in the Canadian Council on 4-H Clubs. Ruth Thoen, elected president of the provincial club at the meeting, was the club's first director on the national council.

The Saskatchewan organization became a member of the national group for the first time last year, she said. There have been no direct effects on the provincial program as a result of membership but the Saskatchewan director seems to have had a positive effect on the national organization, Croteau said. The Saskatchewan council is a good model for the rest of the country, Ian Lithgow, general manager of the Canadian Council on 4-H Clubs, said in an interview. It's a grass-roots volunteer organization with bottom-up acceptance of responsibility. The strides it has EASTBOUND READ DOWN FLIGHT 854 WESTBOUND-READ UP FLIGHT 855 AR.
