Steve Shutt has 16 goals in 16 games, Larry Robinson 20 assists, and Guy Lafleur 26 points. Canadiens as a team are averaging more than five goals a game. I But the scoring race has some other sensations as well.

Rookie Don Murdoch of New York Rangers also is scoring at a goal-a-game clip with 15 and is tied with Lanny McDonald of Toronto Maple Leafs with seven power-play goals, tops in that department. Murdoch also has scored the most game-winning goals, five. Rangers have won only six of 15 games. Glenn Resch of New York Islanders has the best goals-against average. 1.71, followed by Gerry Desjardins of Buffalo with 1.75, Bunny Larocque of Montreal with 2.00, and Ed Giacomin of Detroit Giacomin, let go on traivers by New York Rangers Oct.

Now, it is the Winnipeg Monarchs. They are three different names, but represent the same team which has competed in the Western Canada Hockey League since its inception.

This year, Gerry Brisson's team is called the Monarchs, a name synonom-ous with junior hockey in Winnipeg over the years. Changing names has not helped put people in the building, as Brisson has well learned. But Brisson's franchise was supposed to have moved to Spokane, this year, a deal which fell through but will likely proceed before next season. The Monarchs will supply the opposition tonight for Saskatoon Blades in a WCHL game which starts at 8 p.m. at the Saskatoon Arena.

The Monarchs are off to one of their best starts in years with seven Victories in 11 starts. However, the record is only good enough for third place in the Central Division, which has Calgary and Lethbridge sharing the lead with 19 points. It is not lack of production which has Winnipeg trailing the leaders. It is lack of activity. The Monarchs have not played a game in two weeks.

Thus, if they win tonight, they will have been well rested. If Monarchs lose, they will have been too rusty from inactivity. At least, the coaches have built-in excuses tonight, thanks to the WCHL schedule. The Monarchs' schedule is a makeshift one, but it is a result of the franchise not moving to Spokane, for where the original WCHL schedule was. drawn.

The rule bending and breaking that took place in Formula One this season would fill a book. Ferrari, for one, had illegal coolers on their transaxles, wings mounted too far back and air intakes that were too high. By strict interpretation of the rules, there may not have been a legal car racing, yet Penske and Bruce McLaren were called on several occasions. McLaren needs Grand Prix racing to survive, Penske does not, so Roger called it quits. The Canadian Automobile Sport Club (CASC), governing body of Canadian motorsport, has similar problems.

Witness the recent national run-offs at St. Jovite, where disqualifications and rejects at technical inspection outnumbered the winners. One class almost died at the technical inspection, as but one entry was declared legal. How is this possible, if these are cars which have won their regional standing under the same basic set of rules? Racing rules and technical specifications are adopted at national meetings, where all regions have input and the opportunity to clarify details. Cars are checked at every meet in every region, throughout the year.

To place and gain regional points they must be legal. Surely no one is stupid enough to make his car illegal just for the national finals, or at' least not as many as turned up this year. It's time we stopped referring to it as motorsport. Most of it can be classed as motorbusiness, with some "motor monkey" business on the side. But even business has its rules, or so we're told.

After a brief tenure of a little over two years, North America may again be divest of an entry in Formula One racing. Penske Racing has followed the Vels-Parnelli team which retired from the Grand Prix wars earlier this year. The stipulated reasons differ, but if one could get to the bottom of things there would likely be some interesting common ground. For the record, the Vels-Parnelli effort went down because of lack of finance and Roger Penske feels that his world-wide racing program needs some consolidating. But, in actual fact, both were stung badly by regulations-or the lack of them.

Penske's effort was far and away the most competitive venture. Roger has the money to get the equipment that will do the job and the knowhow to improve it to a winning proposition. The Penske PC4 was a fully-developed car which carried John Watson to a total of 18championship points this season. The total would have been at least four points higher, but a nit-picking disqual-' ification at the French Grand Prix and similar mistreatment at the Italian GP over some alleged illegal fuel left him with 18. Over almost two decades of driving and managing racing teams, Penske had never been caught cheating.

He doesn't have to. He uses the rules' to his advantage and often clears controversial techniques with officials in advance. His preparation is meticulous to the point of being computer like. His crew and drivers are the best and are treated in the same manner. He is fully aware of every gimmick the opposition might have Pickering wins bonspiel summ KAMLOOPS, B.C.

The suspensions of assistant starters Ronald Raymon Finney of Calgary and Alex C. Hosie of Saskatoon, and jockeys Gerald Floyd Kipling of Calgary and Don L. Stauffer of Central City, will end Oct. 31, 1977. Jockey Thomas Hinojosa of Mississauga, Ont, was suspended until Aug.

31, 1977. The suspensions were originally for an Indefinite period. Robert Thompson of Regina, the lawyer representing the society, said the five men were charged with "unfairly, unlawfully or dishonestly Influencing or attempting to influence thoroughbred races for gain." The lawyer said the action being taken is not a formal judicial procedure but "strictly internal discipline" by the Saskatchewan Thoroughbred Society. Thompson said the alleged fixing occurred on five race cards at Marquis Downs In Saskatoon July 23 and 31 and at Exhibition Track In Regina Aug. 11, 20, and 24.
