Personat "14 (Continued) Cartl Of Thanks 5 (Contimitd) Deaths 2 (Continued) 86 the STAR-PHOENIX, Saskatoon, Saturday, September 24, 1977 SIN for all Ottawa goal Persons wanting a number can go to the Federal Build-, ing at First Avenue and 22nd Street. Civil servants will provide a form that proper documentation has been shown to warrant a number. The forms are then sent to Ottawa for processing and a number is mailed back, usually within three weeks, Murray said. To get a number, supporting documentation must be presented. A birth certificate is the besf proof, but certificates of citizenship or naturalization also are accepted.

If for some reason those, proofs are not available, the Unemployment Insurance Commission person taking the information may accept a passport, signed drivers licence or similar proof, Murray said. "If people have a birth cer-. tificate, it normally only fakes about 15 minutes to fill out the forms and then theyre sent away. Its worth that bit of tjme to get a number and avoid all future problems, Murray said. But people planning, for example, to clip Canada Savings Bonds coupons this fall should be sending away- for the numbers now to be sure of receiving them on time.

"If the child didnt have tine, the 25 per cent would be deducted and he would have to file an income tax return in the spring to recover that money. The simplest way to avoid any of the difficulty is to do what the government wants get a social insurance number. Dave Murray, chief of op--erations at, the Canada Employment Centre in Sas- katoon, said there is no cost involved but it could take up to a month to receive one so persons wanting to clip coupons should apply immediately. Murray said there is no way of knowing how many people in Saskatchewan still are without a social insurance number. But he said the federal decision to tighten rules to make people obtain a SIN has shown quite a few, especially elderly, people never did receive a number.

It is a general practise now for young people to be given forms through the high, school which are sent away en masse, meaning most of them get a number automat- ically, Murray said. However, very young children are not given )he number and parents must I apply on their behalf if they I require a SIN before they I reach high school age. The federal government has launched a campaign to force all Canadians to get a social insurance number (SIN). In short, that is what is behind the recent revelation that people clipping interest D.Q. (Dave) Marshall Mr.

B.G. Wilcox, Director of Operations, GWG Limited is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. D. Marshall as General Production Manager. Mr.

Marshall win be responsible) for the Manufacturing Plants in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Brantford. coupons on bonds will have one-quarter of the interest withheld unless they have a number. "Were not after money. Were after people to get their SIN, an Ottawa income tax department official said in a telephone He asked that his name ftot i be used. Those most affected by this portion of the campaign are persons with Canada Savings Bonds, but anyone cashing bearer coupons or warrants of any type is involved.

A person taking the interest coupons to a bank is asked to produce a social insurance number. If that person does not have one, 25 per cent of interest is withheld and a form is issued. The person then includes the form when next filing income tax and the appropriate deduction is made. You get full credit (or it then, but of course you have to wait until April, the income tax man said. He said the rule does not apply to trusts, estates or non-residents of Canada because in those cases pressure to get i social insurance number either is not warranted or does not apply.

What about a child for whom the parents bought a bond and coupons are being leashed? "In some provinces, a SIN is issued at birth. But anyone lean get a number at any (time, even a young child, i the tax man said.
