The activities included an 18-hole golf door prizes, kicker prizes and a picnic hosted by Michael C. Rush, King's Mountain PGA golf professional, and his wife Robin. Winner of the golf scramble with a 6-under 66 score was the foursome of Devon Miller, Marv Gossett, Dean Barron and George Strawn. One stroke back in second place with a 5-under 67 was the runner-up foursome of Rich Fletcher, Fred Miller Wayne Herbert and Bernie Wolfe.

Tied for third place with 4-under scores were the foursomes of Stan Brooks, Verle Fritz, Don Clark and Jerry "Jesse" James; Jay Hay, Earl Halfhill, Dale Cole and Robert "Hank Snow" Sembower; Jim Shubert, Al Livingstone, Bill Aujnan and Bucky Shultz, and Homer Hinzy Frank Melegari, Ralph Smith and Bud Griglak. Jim Thome hit a grand slam, Harold Baines added a three-run and Charles Nagy pitched seven solid innings Thursday as Cleveland moved within a win of sweeping the AL division series from Boston with an 11-1 rout of the Red Sox. The Indians, who were the first team in 49 years to score more than 1,000 runs during the regular season, looked for a while like they inight try to match that figure Thursday. Cleveland capitalized on Bret wildness and scored 11 runs in a two-inning span to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 series.

The Red Sox, who lost Pedro Martinez to a back injury in Game 1, will turn to another Martinez, Pedro's brother, Ramon, to save their season in Game 3 Saturday at -Fenway Park. Dave Burba, a post- iiliu iui uic iiiuioiia ginning out of the bullpen last year, starts for Cleveland. The Indians, who had lost eight straight series openers before winning Wednesday night, have won straight postseason games against the Red Sox. Pedro Martinez, who removed himself after four innings in Game 1, said the muscle strain in his back had improved, but that there was persistent pain and he planned to throw again on Saturday. Even if he can pitch again, it may be too late for the Red Sox, who dropped to 1-18 since Bill Buckner's infamous error in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.

Oklahoma (3-1) for the 94th time. Both teams are coming off tough losses, but that won't matter in the Cotton Bowl as this showdown could turn into a quarterback shootout between the Sooners' Josh Heupel and Longhorns' Major Applewhite. "The possibility of losing my card was an eye-opener," said Benz, who along with Lisa Kiggens shot 5-under-par 67 Thursday for a piece of the first round lead of the $775,000 First Union Betsy King Classic at the par-72, Berkleigh Country Club. Michigan coach Lloyd Carr probably described most rivalry trophies best when he said of the Bunyan prize: "It's the ugliest trophy in college football. When you don't have him you miss him, but it's ugly." The Michigan-Michigan State matchup is a beauty.

For the first time since 1961, both teams enter the game undefeated at 5-0. While Carr and Michigan State's Nick Saban are trying to play it cool, they know how important it is to win this game. "In addition to the traditional rivalry, the game has added significance because we're both in the Big Ten race." Said "In this rivalry, I don't think it matters what the records are." For the record, the Wolverines have won the last three meetings, including 29-17 last year at Ann Arbor. Michigan holds a 60-26-5 lead in the series that began in 1898. Michigan State features the nation's top-ranked rushing defense, which allows 42.8 yards per game, and the steady play of Bill Burke, with 909 yards and 11 touchdown passes including a school record-tying fourTDs in last week's 49-3 win over Iowa.
