(AP) The Beverly Hills Supper Club burned down before in 1970. The owners rebuilt it without a water-sprinkler safety which the law did not require. "We've just got to find out why a building that is only seven years old can burn so quickly," Southgate Mayor Ken Paul said Sunday in the aftermath of Saturday night's fire. "I'm sure there are going to be some new state and federal laws once they get to the bottom of this." Paul suggests that sprinklers be mandatory in Kentucky buildings.

Firefighters had pulled 159 bodies from the rubble by late Sunday night. Busboy Walter Bailey, 18, tried hard to avoid panicking the patrons after fire broke. He almost didn't panic them enough. "I did not mention the word until I had showed them where all the exits are," he said. it took a while for anyone to believe me because I had to take the microphone away from two comedians." Bailey had taken centre stage in the 900-seat Cabaret Club Saturday night after being told that flames had appeared in another of the club's rooms.

He wrested the microphone from the comedy team of Jim Teter and Jim McDonald, who were on a bill with singer John Davidson, and issued calm instructions to leave. "They just stood there, surprised," he said. "People started to move outside in an orderly way until a door opened and smoke came rolling out. It was then everyone went wild. just knew that I had to keep myself from getting everyone excited.

we got out of the room, you could see the smoke coming up the halls. "It really spread fast. In five minutes, it was all over the After fleeing the flames, Bailey said, he and some fellow workers decided to go back in. "I heard people moaning and calling for help," he said. "We went back in and started carrying people out.

Most of them were down on the floor. We grabbed people by the shirts and hands, anything we would grab. We saved a lot of lives, maybe 20 or 30." Another who worked to save Davidson recalls panic LOS ANGELES (AP) Singer John Davidson, who escaped as fire engulfed the Beverly Hills Supper Club just before he was to perform, recalls panic and a thousand people "just jammed in" one room. His music director and six members of a club band which was providing Davidson's musical accompaniment died along with hundreds of others in the fire at the Southgate, nightclub Saturday. Davidson, the headliner at the club, said he was shaving in his dressing room before the show when his drummer rushed in and told him the building was on fire.

"We didn't think it was that serious," Davidson told a reporter for radio station KNX after returning to his home here Sunday. "It's like any tragedy you think that it is not going to be that bad. So we very slowly filed out and then the filing got faster and faster. "Just seconds after we got out, the door we carne through was engulfed with smoke and flames," Davidson, 35, said. He said that after he escaped, he helped hold doors open so that others could get out.

people were jamming the doors, and there was such a panic. I estimate there were 1,100 people in the one room I was in, just jammed in. "The fire spread so fast. There was no smoke when I first went down from my dressing room, and so I went out thinking I'll come back for my stuff because we didn't see any fire at all. the black smoke came very quickly in this big building full of banquet hails, a and I just know there are more people in there." About 1,000 persons were jammed into Boston's largest nightclub the evening of Nov. 28, 1942, when flames, thick smoke and carbon monoxide turned the place into a furnace. More than 300 persons had crowded Natchez's Rhythm Club for a Saturday night of dancing on an April evening in 1940. Spanish moss and paper decorations hung from the ceiling fuelled a fire. Locked fire exits were blamed by French officials when 144 persons aged between 17 and 25 perished in a fire at the Club Cing-Sept northwest of Grenoble on Nov.
