"I thought you were ffl Id-LJ L'nstramhle thes four Jumblet, one letter to each square, to form four ordinary word-. For those who believe that bridge is merely a game (many believe that it is a maniacical obsession), the following item is offered in refutation. The incident occurred in the early 1930s, and is quoted verbatim as it appeared in a Chicago newspaper some 40 years ago.

"Cut Glass Has Its Uses Chicago Mrs. Lila Gray Colyer, who held 13 diamonds in a bridge game and won the contract at six nolrump after a spade bid by an opponent is suing for divorce. When she was set 12 tricks, her husband, so the complaint avers, hit her with a cut-glass bowl, the nearest missile." In today's deal, we have a Neither side vulnerable-South deals. NORTH A73 97542 962 Q5 WEST EAST K10862 J94 AQ3 K108 84 5 K97 4A108632 SOUTH Q5 J6 AKQJ1073 J4 The bidding: South West North East 3NT Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: Sixol situation remotely similar in type to the bidding of six no trump with 13 diamonds. The difference is that in this deal, the bidder entertained hopes of fulfilling his contract.

The band came up in a duplicate game. South's opening bid of three notrump was a conventional type of bid employed by some experts. It is known as the "gambling three notrump opening," and is made on a solid seven-card suit, with a smattering of high card strength on the outside. As he makes the call, the bidder hopes (1) that his partner will have enough stuff to enable the contract to be fulfilled, or failing that (2) there is the hope that the defenders will not find the winning defense. After West had opened a low spade, and the dummy came into view, South perceived that he had eight sure winners.

If he played low from dummy, and East possessed the spade king, declarer figured to go down five or six tricks. The issue was whether declarer should settle for down one; or to gamble going down five or six tricks (and possibly running the risk that partner might throw the nearest available missile at him). Declarer finally decided to gamble it out; he played low from dummy at trick one. East's jack of spades was put up, and declarer, with a sigh of relief, won the trick with his queen. He then claimed his contract; two spades and seven diamonds.
