The Usual Reason for Over weight Is Too Much Food, Dr. G. L. Thorpe Says. By Conwell Carlson. (A Member of The Star’s Staff.f New York, June 4.—Keep it simple, on why we are overweight and how to reduce, says Dr. George L. Thorpe of Wichita, and maybe we'll get somewhere. Dr. Thorpe, a Kansas general practitioner, told the convention of the American Medical association that fancy nonsense about dieting blocks control of weight for health. The simple reason many Americans are too fat is that they eat too much, he said in a talk given to the A. M. A. section on general practice, of which he is chairman. Too Much Nonsense. The notion that glandular disorders or emotional conflicts cause many cases of overweight is nonsense, in the doctor’s opinion. “If a woman decides to reduce because her family and friends urge her to do so, success seldom follows,” Dr. Thorpe said. “If she decides to reduce to increase her own attractiveness, success is easy. The overweight businessman seldom buys the idea he should lose weight to please his family. But if a doctor explains how weight control will make him feel better, more efficient, and at ease, co-operation often results. Dr. Thorpe defined proper eating as the use of natural foods in normal amounts. For the person past normal weight, he said, the foods should be high in protein and fat, and low in sugar. Must Limit Sweet Food. If intake of sweet foods is held within the limits of the body’s capacity to burn the sugar, the sugar won't be converted- into fat, he explained. A starting diet of meat, fat find water will produce rapid loss or weight without hunger, weakness, lethargy or constipation, Dr. Thorpe said. Black coffee, tea and water are used without restriction and later vegetables and fruits low in sugar can be added. ‘‘Cereals, milk, cream and other rich foods are all right for many persons, but have no place in the fat man’s reduction list” he said. red H tuff I stirs suit . “Our Gang” Star Insists It’s Lipstick on Shirt.
