Reine, Hudson's Bay House, 77 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba TOKYO (Reuter) Japan will sound out West Germany and France on the possibility of arranging a "friendly float" to keep the yen at a certain level above their currencies, Japanese monetary officials said today. Six out of the nine Common Market countries have decided to float their currencies jointly against the U.S.

dollar, but the yen has already been floating since last month, achieving an effective revaluation of about 16 per cent against the dollar. The officials said it would not be realistic in view of Japan's large trade surplus if the yen, one of the world's strongest currencies, should drift lower than the market currencies when the foreign exchange markets reopen. Under the "friendly float" the Bank of Japan would intervene to keep the yen at a certain level above the mark and the franc through an understanding with West Germany and France, the officials said. Under a realignment of the world's major currencies in 1971, the differential between the revaluation of the yen and the mark was three per cent, but this time West Germany might ask for a larger margin between the two floating currencies, the officials said.
