the STAR-PHOENIX Saskatoon Saturday, June 21, MT Payne cool about scrimmage .7 rv.v 4 By Bob Hughes Special to the Star-Phoenix REGINA The Saskatchewan Roug-hnders held their first scrimmage Friday of what has been a relatively quiet 1975 Canadian Football League training camp. When it ended, coach John Payne did not run up and down the halls of Regina Campusscreanung: "Grey Cup or bust Instead, he quietly pronounced the 30-mmute scrimmage as "a typical first scrimmage. We looked ragged It was pretty well what Payne had expected, although in some areas he might have come out a bit disappointed. Both the first units were playing the old pro part until they started looking bad. Over-all, though, it was kind of ragged, but I was pleased with the way the defence hit, Payne noted.

For those who showed up at the campus practice site in between hail and rain showers, a lot of eyes followed the play along the lines and into the linebacking corps. If people didnt notice defensive tackle Ken Thomas, then they heard him Thomas was a part-time, play-by-play announcer during his stmt in the scrimmage, incessantly chattering away at the offence a move which threatened to turn the line play into a mini-war. At various times, the rookie from Tulsa had Gary Brandt, Clyde Brock and Ralph Galloway snorting fire. Once, after Brandt caught him a stinging shot, Thomas turned and said, Take it easy, were on the same team. "Not today were not, Brandt said "Thomas got off to a good start, Payne said.

"He's so darn quick. Then, the old pros kind of wore him down Theyre not dumb. Maybe, Thomas has to stop antagomzmg them. While its still a little early to tell, offensive tackle Ed Foster, the All-American from Oklahoma who played with Florida Blazers in the World Football League last year, hasnt lived up to the advance billing. "Ive watched him in the drills," Payne said, "but Ill reserve my comments until we've seen more of him.

He's still learn ing the system Sometimes, uidecision will eliminate some of the quickness But, there were bright moments emergmg from Fndays action Corner linebacker AI Humphrey, the 6-3, 230-pounder from Tulsa, who is destined for Pete WysockTs spot is looking every bit the part He better than we expected, Payne said For a man his size, hes a lot smoother than I thought he might be Payne says he'll keep the club hitluig throughout his twice daily workouts this weekend Were still behind in our schedule, he says GARY BRANDT upset S.
