yi the STAR-PHOENIX Saskatoon, Wednesday, March 20, 1974 53 IN MEMORIAM TENDERS (Continued) TENDERS (Continued) Non-medical drug use drops in Regina schools He said students should be told that if they are going to drink there are consequences and responsibilities involved. Education programs should be initiated at the kindergarten level and should continue to include alcohol instruction with driver training, he said. Driving simulators could be used to give students a chance to see their own reactions while under the influence of alcohol, he suggested. Betty Sear, director of education for the Alcoholism Commission of Saskatchewan, told the same forum alcohol was involved in 2,926 motor vehicle accidents in 1970-71 and was a factor in 25 per cent of provincial hospital admissions. Alcohol-related problems in Saskatchewan accounted for --more than $19 million in expenses, which included auto accidents, work time lost, court fines and hospital costs, she said.

The figure of $19 million is only the tip of the iceberg; alcohol can not be judged in dollar terms alone; its greatest hurt is socially, Mrs. Sear said. It would appear that many of Saskatchewans smaller communities are having to confront the issue now, he said. Drug use during school hours has almost disappeared but many students continue to use intoxicants outside of school hours and a few senior high school students are spending their lunch hours in liquor outlets, the report said. Some high schools have cut down on dances and others are considering cancelling them altogether because of problems with alcohol; he said.

Earlier Monday Mr. Lazecki told a public forum that as many as 99 per cent of Grade 7 and 8 students have tried alcohol and about half of all Grade 8 students have been drunk. 1 Trustees to review report A booklet produced by a New. Democratic Party task force on educational problems and possible solutions will be reviewed by senior administrators of the Saskatoon public education system. At a public board meeting Tuesday, the board authorized the education director to have his staff review the document and prepare reactions for the boards consideration.

Board chairman Dr. John Egnatoff said, as a trustee and private citizen, he followed with keen interest the publication of any political documents and added he believed there are serious implications for school administration contained in the booklet. The publication dealt with problems in' rural and urban curriculum, social and physical environment awareness, teacher training, school councils and education finance and administration. Saskatchewan School Trustees Association (SSTA) executive L. I.

Thorson and Saskatoon public education director Dr. Ray Fast stated it is possible the document could become the official education policy for the NDP. However, NDP education director John Solomon said previously the booklet is only the first step in policy formation for 1975 and was published to stimulate discussion at constituency seminars. The document suggested a minimum of three years of education training for teachers, possible introduction of school councils and the improvement of rural school facilities, among other recommendations. Employees contract ratified MELFORT Council ratified the 1974 contract with town employees at a meeting Monday night.

The agreement provides for an increase of slightly more than, ten per cent. Steps were also taken to approve the premises to be vacated by the Melfort public library for senior citizen use. The meeting also approved development of a new residential sub division to provide 103 lots and a local improvement program of about This includes hot mix asphalt, curb, sidewalk, sewer and water installations.
