Spock has responded His peace offering to his critics and perhaps especially to the feminists is his latest revision of and Child Care Each decade it seems the pediatrician is accused of ignoring and revisions of the book he wrote 1946 Those changes were basically medical Now he has published this edition which is a completely up-dated no nonsense non-sexist child care manual because for the first time two things happen in the book First all babies are no longer And secondly Benjamin Spock admits that although he always assumed that the mother should take the greater share of the care of her children i now recognize that the father responsibility is as great as the mother So the book has been judiciously amended to bring Dad into the picture and to acknowledge the profound changes tn family life in the 1970s Much of the book remains unchanged After all methods of burping bibbing or bedding change radically But Dr Spock has added new subjects often at the end of chapters tor tgday parents For instance he adds latest scientific evaluations on obesity in small children and discusses the most recent desirables at the end of the food chapter One ot the more obvious changes in this book is the non -sexist viewpoint Dr Spock pledges in his foreword not to use the pronoun A chapter once tilled Clothes He II now reads Clothes Babies Need In his 196k revision ot the book he apologized for using he then proceeded to use it throughout the book anyway While Dr Spock is not one to admit he was wrong he does restate and in some cases totally reverse some of his former beliefs He says he used to thtnk it was wise for parents to strengthen the maleness of boys or femaleness of girls by differentiating between their clothes toys and chores Now he says: now realize that the main thing that gives a bov a strong sex identity is not the tov cars or the cowboy suits he given but primarily his positive relationship with his father in early childhood that makes him want to grow up to be the same kind of person" And the same man who promoted giving nursing kits to little girls and tool kits to little boys now says such distinctions are old tradition and cause inferiority and destroy self confidence particularly in girls He says it is sound advice to give hoys and girls the same chores (bed making yard work to eliminate discrimination or differentiation New words crop up in the index too: marijuana natural childbirth hyperactivity crib death He discusses day care centers nursery and Montessori schools and suggests parents should out some kind of compromise between their two jobs and the needs of their His section on adoption is extensively and realistically updated including a part on the single adoptive parent The new book is also more pleasing to read with slightly larger type and there's a numerous difference in sketches Women are wearing slacks and even men appear in working roles In one sketch with the section on feed ings there used to be a mother desper ately trying to feed a squirming baby in a high chair This time around the babe is still squirming but the desperate feeder is and black Ah but times have changed since Dr Spock first wrote his reference book With so many pediatric specialists mot hers are less apt to turn to the little book for advice quite as often But still popular second only to the Holy Bible on I best seller lists and
