B2 Timus Colonist Friday May 1 8 200 1 Arts WMUm 'Mm '0 Vs 3 Warhol silkscreen fetches $8.4 million at auction NEW YORK AP) A 1 964 Andy Warhol silkscreen of two flowers sold for $8.4 million US at Christie's sale of postwar art, far exceeding its presale estimate of $3 million to $4 million. The large scale work from the artist's Large Flowers series was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder, following spirited bidding in the room among major dealers and auction house executives. It fetched the highest price of the Wednesday evening auc- -tion. Warhol's 1962 Orange Marilyn drew the second highest price of the evening. It went for $3.7 million to an anonymous telephone bidder whom Christie's described only as a "European private." It was estimated at $2 million to $3 million.

Of the 59 works offered for sale, only 10 failed to sell, a sign that Wednesday's stock market jumps gave buyers confidence. Final prices include Christie's commission 17.5 per cent of the first $80,000 plus 10 per cent of any amount above that. Estimates do not reflect commissions. Alberni abuzz: Gritty look From page Bl The Arrowview, which masqueraded as the apartment of Pacino's character, was one of several locations used around Argyle Street near Harbour Quay in what was the original centre of town. Scoffield said the filmmakers were attracted to older, rundown buildings like the Arrowview and the neighbouring Somass Hotel because they fit in with the gritty, small-town Alaska look they were after. "Maybe redevelopment of this area isn't such a good thing," joked the commission's secretary-treasurer David Lord. "The film companies seem to want to shoot movies in all the decrepit places." Adds Scoffield: "What does that say about the stereotype of Alaska?" EX ifW THE TAILOR BLOW Mai. Fri.

Scenes for Harry Tracey: Desperado were shot near Port Alberni in the early '80s, and the cameras rolled on the Charlton Heston adventure Alaska a few years back. Cathedral Grove on the winding road out of town was also featured in Yellow Dog, as was Cameron Lake for scenes in Jean-Jacques Annaud's historical epic Quest for Fire two decades ago. The area has also attracted production of commercials for products from Kel-logg's, Scotiabank, Nescafe, Ford and Canadian Savings Bonds. The producers scouted locations in Powell River, Campbell River, Duncan and Courtenay before settling on Port Alberni, says Scoffield. Using the multiplier effect, he estimated the Insomnia shoot has injected upwards of $1.2 million into the Alberni region's economy.

"They hired 12 tradesmen for three weeks of advance construction, there was minimum of between 600 and 1,000 room nights, so it all adds up," says Scoffield. His commission, he says, has a "friendly rivalry" with other Vancouver Island commissions like the one in Campbell River, which benefited immensely two years ago with the extended shoot of the big-budget Vikings adventure The Thirteenth Warrior. Being used for scenes in a film like Insomnia, says Scoffield, was just what was needed to put Port Alberni on the movie-making map. To encourage shooting in locations on the Island, the Vancouver Island Film Association recently received a $60,000 provincial government grant. RUSHES: It couldn't have been better timed given the long-awaited annihilation of the NDP.

Just hours after Gordon Campbell's Liberals marched to victory, shooting on the David Caruso thriller Black Point literally ended with a bang in the wee hours of Thursday morning when a schooner was blown up at Point Hope beneficiary of the Insomnia shoot in Port Alberni was a single mom and waitress who got a whopping $65 tip from movie people at a local the talk of the town was how surreal it was for locals to have Pacino on their streets the same day he was being profiled on Biography, complete with a closing reference to the Insomnia Michael D.
