An example is the Cobequid Highlands which have the highest moose population of any area of Nova Scotia. This may be because the Moose remain high in the mountains during heavy snowfall while deer move to lower regions, he says. It is in winter, when deer gather in herds and leave large piles of droppings in the yarding areas, that moose are most likely to pick the parasite.

Hildebrand. Leader, Sask. 12-20-e Wildlife biologists are convinced that a tiny parasite is 1 the weapon by which the 200- pound deer kill off their pound cousins. 1 This parasite has been carried by deer for generations without serious effects on the whitetail. It's also harmless to humans.

But it Is passed on with disastrous results to the moose by means of a carrier. The parasite produces "moose sickness" which, many biologists feel, is a major reason for the severe decline of moose populations in many areas of Nova Scotia. A moose infected with the ailment is a pitiful sight. Blind, starving and stupid, it will run into fences lose its fear of man and begin eating anything handy whether harmful or not. The usual cause of death is starvation.

The parasite attacks the central nervous system, either in the spinal column or at the base of the brain. Attempts to study moose sickness by collecting heads from hunters' kills are complicated when the affliction is in the spinal column since hunters don't like to part with choice meat. A major study of the prob. lem is being made at Acadia University, Wolf I I I where Dr Donald Dodds, formerly with the lands and forests department, is associate professor of biology. He says the creature that picks up the parasite from deer feces and carries it until it is ingested by moose has been identified as an old enemythe snail.

A possible solution would be to clean up slash in cutover areas of the forest, thereby reducing the piles of dead and dying vegetation that breed snails. Chemical control, despite biologists' fear of upsetting nature's balance, also may be an answer. Gerry Barker of Bear River, N.S., an Acadia biology student YANOSZEWSKI THE FUNERAL service of Samuel Yenoszewsk4 who died on December 11, 1605, was held from Westwood Memorial Chanel on December 16 at 2 p.m. conducted by Dr J. Leith.

Pallbearers were: Pereschitz, S. Halloo. O. Aksantuk. Grebenulk.

S. Posnikoft W. Lifwinowych. Interment was made in Wood lawn Cemetery. 12-18-c NOTICES (Continued) The lands and forests departments of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the Canadian Wildlife Service and federal agriculture department are co-operating in the Acadia study of snail ecology, expected to be finished in February or March.

Although moose sickness may have been noticed generations ago, the first real interest was shown during the early 1950s when a biologist came here from Maine which had lost its moose population because of the infection. The snail was finally tagged as the culprit about 18 months ago by a member of the Ontario Research Foundation, Dr. Dodds says. The exact species of snail or slug is one of the questions Acadia is trying to answer. Reinforcing the belief that deer are indirectly responsible for the demise of the moose ig experienced in Newfoundland.

The province didn't have a moose 100 years ago. Then half a dozen were introduced from the Maritimes. The island province hasn't got any deer but the moose population has grown rapidly. Two years ago there were almost 000, so many that removal zones were formed where each resident hunter could kill three. And moose sickness is unknown in the province.
