STUFF TO BID ON THETWOA THE WHEEL TRAILER?) DUMP AND IP ITS JUST THE WHEELS AND CAN BUILD A BOCYON rr Much stronger Fischer improved: Spassky HI AND LOIS By MORT WALKER AND DIK BROWNE dashing Cuban who held the world chess championship in the 1920s. In a rare public interview, held in the Saga Hotel before a group of Western journalists the four Soviet newsmen who are expected to cover the championship have not yet arrived Spassky said his chess style tended to be less classical than that of Fischer or Capablanca. Spassky defeated Fischer in two of their five games, and REYKJAVIK.

Iceland Boris Spassky, the chess champion of the world, who has played Bobby Fischer five times and never been beaten, says that since their last encounter Fischers game has become much stronger than before." Fischer, the Soviet grandmaster said, has a style that is very practical, with immense energy." He compared his American challenger to Jose Raoul Capablanca, a SESAME STREET He avoided discussing politics, though he did say, when pressed, that he was not a member of the Communist party. As for the match with i which has been widely touted as an East-West confrontation he said: While seated at the -chess board, I am a chess player and not a politician." Iceland is putting up a purse of $125,000, the winner to receive 62 5 per cent. Asked how much of the purse he would be allowed to keep, Spassky replied, If I only knew myself," then wryly added How much will Fischer be allowed to keep?" He said he was fond of Fischer and, asked if that meant fond enough to call him Bobby. He replied, with a perfectly straight face after thinking for a moment, I refer to him as Robert James." 1 the three others were drawn. The last time they met was in September, 1970.

Asked how he would counter Fischers all-but-inevitable opening move pawn to king 4the Soviet champion grinned and said: That is a professional secret." Spassky, handsome, medium-sized man with thick brown hair, blue-green eyes and the figure of an athlete, parried most of the questions thrown at him with diplomatic tact. Yes, he has always liked Iceland, No, he hasn't seen the hall yet but is sure that everything will be just fine. No, he will not be bothered by the long hours of daylight the Arctic circle just brushes the northern tip of Iceland and, though the sun dips below the horizon for about an hour, there is no real darkness at this time of year. BLONDIE By CHIC YOUNG Fischer warned REDEYE-By GORDON BESS to fly on the Jewish Sabbath, between sundown Friday and sundown Saturday. Informed sources in Reykjavik said that Fischer informed the Icelandic Chess Federation that he wouldnt play unless he got 39 per cent of the gate receipts.

This would be in addition to his share of the $125,000 purse and 30 per cent of the receipts from the sales of television and film rights already agreed to. The Icelandic federation was reported seeking a compromise in negotiations with Fred Cramer, former president of the American Chess Federation, who is acting as Fischers advance man. The Icelanders said they have already spent about $200,000 on preparations, and if they meet Fischers demand they cant break even. The gate receipts probably will be considerable. Matches will be played three to six days a week in a sports palace with seats at $5 each.

And the series is expected to last two months. AMSTERDAM (AP) The president of the World Chess Federation has threatened United States champion Bobby Fischer with blacklisting following reports he is holding out for a cut of the gate receipts from his world chess championship with Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. Dr. Max Euew, the world federation president and veteran Dutch grandmaster, said Thursday night that if the 29-year-old American fails to appear Sunday for the start of the world chess championship in Reykjavik, Iceland, he stands to lose his rights to play for the world title not only this time but perhaps forever." Fischer was seen Thursday night at New Yorks Kennedy airport, but Icelandic Airlines said he did not board its flight to Reykjavik. When reporters tried to question him, his bodyguards fended them off.

The next flight from New York to Iceland is tonight. But Fischer in the past has refused CP Wirephoto Canadian champion Peter Biyiasas, 21, of Vancouver, is shown in Toronto following his win in the Canadian Open chess championships. i STAR AUTO BODY SERVICE Your guide to goods and services offered by specialists in Saskatoon FREE Theatre Tickets for You!
