Born in Vancouver on April 29, 1928, Bill grew up in Halifax and Nova Scotia's south shore. At 16, exaggerating his age, he joined the Merchant Navy, serving five years that saw him travel the world near the end of the Second World War into the late 1940s. An immensely proud veteran, he would remain an active member of ANAF in Sidney. Upon returning to Canada, Bill experienced the lure of the West Coast, traveling back to Vancouver. He soon met Mary, the love of his life.

On their honeymoon in 1950, they went to Victoria, where they settled, raising seven children. While working in sawmills up and down Vancouver Island for the Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau was his job for nearly 40 years, the passions of Bill's life were numerous. An avid gardener, he turned out beautiful geraniums and other flowers from his green houses. His skills as a fisherman yielded scores of smoked salmon and delicious dinners. But above all, Bill's greatest joy came from spending time with his family and friends.

His storytelling, wit and infectious laugh were the hit of every gathering; his practical wisdom and everyday kindness a rare combination. Bill was predeceased by his parents, William Henry and Olive, and his lone sibling, Reg. Earlier this year, he was deeply saddened by the sudden loss of his dear daughter-in-law, Layne (Dave). Bill is survived by Mary, his cherished wife of 52 years, his seven children; Bill, Jim (Valerie), Barb (Ed), Cathy (Richard), John (Valerie), Dave and Dan (Mary); nine grandchildren; Richard, Michael, Sharrlyn, Leighton, Kyle, Philip, Sarah and Ryanne and many nieces and nephews as well as his cousins in Nova Scotia. So give to me, I only beg, A little roof to call my own, A little cider in the keg, A little meat upon the bone; A little garden by the sea, A little boat that dips and swings Take wealth, take fame, but leave to me, Lord of Life, just Little Things." He was 86. He died July 27 in the nursing home where he had lived in recent months, his daughter Kathleen Hees said.

Inn may have been television's greatest animal star maker. In the early 1950s, he trained his first big star, Cleo, the basset hound on The People's Choice who appeared with the actor Jackie Cooper. He followed up with Tramp, the mutt on My Three Sons, and Higgins, the canine star of Petticoat Junction, and also trained animals for shows like Love Lucy, Ozzie and Harriet, The Addams Family and Barnaby Jones. At his peak, he worked a menagerie of around 1,000 animals, tended by 30 trainers, many of whom went on to train their own animal celebrities. Among them were Karl Lewis Miller, trainer of Babe the pig; Steve Martin, the handler of Gidget the taco-hawking Chihuahua; and Gary Gero, whose animals were seen in the recent remakes of Dr.

Dolittle and 101 Dalmatians. From mynah birds to skunks, Inn had everything beastly a studio might order. And if he didn't have it, he improvised: His Hereford bull looked just like the needed buffalo after a makeup artist's magic. WILLIAM MALLOW Prolific inventor helped refine Liquid Paper San Antonio Express News SAN ANTONIO William A. Mallow, a prolific inventor who helped develop some of the most ubiquitous products for commercial and household use, including Liquid Paper and clumping cat litter, died of acute leukemia on July 30 at a San Antonio hospital.

He was 72. A polymer chemist, Mallow spent nearly 40 years with the Southwest Research Institute, where he worked on a variety of projects, from tiles for the space shuttle to improving the silicone rubber skin covering on the robotic dinosaurs in the Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. He also figured out how to remove the peanut butter from the moulds at candy factories. Liquid Paper, the typewriter correction fluid, was invented by Bette Nesmith Graham, but at her request, Southwest Research helped refine the product. Southwest Research is an independent, not-for-profit development centre based in San Antonio.

The cat litter, known as Scoop Away Clean, allows clumps of urine and solid waste to be removed daily, leaving the rest of the box fresh. More recently, Mallow, who retired from Southwest Research in 1998 but remained a technical adviser, was working on a slippery gel designed for thwart rioters or enemy attacks on military installations. GERHARD WESSEL Espionage chief led Germany's intelligence agency New York Times Gerhard Wessel, a spy for Nazi Germany who went on to head West Germany's espionage agency, has died near Munich. He was 88. He is regarded as the founder of West Germany's counterintelligence service, which he headed for seven years.

As chief of the agency known as the BND, for Bundesnachrichtendienst he is credited with modernizing German intelligence gathering. Wessel, who died July 28, hired academic analysts and electronics experts to serve alongside agents, and ordered spies to stop shadowing Germans inside Germany. He listed the BND in the phone book. Wessel's agency had many successes. It informed the government three months in advance of the Soviet Union's plans to invade Czechoslovakia in 1968.

It also gathered early information about dissatisfaction among shipyard workers in Gdansk, which led to upheaval in Poland in the 1980s. On the other hand, there were a disturbing number of incidents of East Germans infiltrating the West German gov eminent, on Wessel's watch, BIRNIE George, August 7, 2000. Another year has past, since God called you away But still we miss you each and every day What we wouldn't give to take one more walk Or just quietly sit and have one more talk Miss you Dad and always will, for though you're gone, we love you still. Love and missed by his family. 775 MEMORIAL GIFTS In Memoriam Gifts fund vital heart and stroke research and health promotion programs Please print the name of the deceased or person honoured; the nameaddress of the next of kin for card; and your nameaddress for tax receipt (Visa and MC accepted).
