T. ALLAN 111 recent months many items have appeared in Canadian newspapers on the subject of youth hostels. So far as genuine hostelling, as carried on internationally and represented in Canada by the Canadian Youth Hostel Federation, is concerned, these items are generally as valid as the views of the Gay Liberation Front on marital happiness. The proposals, so widely voiced, for free accommodation (and perhaps food) for travelling youth, hippies, and runaway teen-agers would most likely ruin the prospects for the full establishment of true hostelling by creating a bad public image. True hostelling is not certain things.

It is not a system of providing free accommodation for those who have decided to reject the obsolete work ethic of western society. It is not a hippie-hole, pot-house, crash-pad, or reasonable facsimile. It has nothing to do with refusing to let the police check the guest register without a warrant. It is not a centre for radicalizing young people and polarizing society. True youth hostelling is rather a system which permits and encourages young people of limited means to travel economically, seeing their own and other countries, while receiving nightly accommodation for 30 cents to $1.50.

A genuine youth hostel is run to a set of behav-ioral standards so high that Europeans encourage their children as young as 12 to go hostelling as a healthy recreation. At this moment, thousands of Canadians in the 17-25 age group are in hostels in Europe, seeing the sights on budgets as low as $2 a day for hostel and meals. TTie same young people in Canada, however, are forced to stay in $5 or $10 hotel rooms or unroll a sleeping bag in a park and thus add to the hippie problem. These are the ones for whom youth hostels are intended, those who are still a part of society and who simply wish to see the country. From my experience in Europe I believe that I can safely say that most young travellers are willing to pay within their means for a warm dry bed, proper shower and laundry facilities, and the other benefits of a hostel.

Not the least of these benefits is the relative freedom from the types who will cheerfully steal your last $30 to support their early retirement. I stayed in Rome for 12 days for a total cost under $30, including two days of guided bus tours. Admission to all national museums and monuments (such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum) was free through a guest card available to hostellers. The key to economy was in sleeping at 80 cents a night in the 1960 Rome Olympics athletes dormitory, now converted to a youth hostel. ft is clearly impossible to visit any Canadian city with similar economy, short of sleeping in the parks or hippie dens.

Yet young people are determined to travel, and they cannot pay hotel rates. (YMCAs are usually overcrowded and charge as much as $4 a night to transient guests.) The answer, then, is youth hostels on the European pattern. Proper youth hostels would serve not only travelling youth, but school activities and other youth groups as well. 2 to 50 IFF!
