Most talent pickers here have terrible batting averages. Through the years studio executives have "passed over" stars like Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Kim Novak, Bing Crosby, Spencer Tracy, Cary Grant. The latest example of their "no talent" classification is Erin O'Brien, a 23-ycar-old, dark-haired Irish beauty who was born here, but had to go to New York to be discovered.

Erin, the first of Vincent and Betty O'Brien's 14 children, has a naturally lyrical voice. As a youngster she performed regularly with the Long Beach Philharmonic Orchestra. After graduation from St. Anthony's parochial school, she became one of the famous Walter Schumann Voices. But true to the Hollywood tradition of missing what lies under its nose, this colleen as consistently ignored until last year.

In New York, on Arthur Godfrey's talent scout TV program, she sang one number, Only a Rose. She won hands down, and was signed for a week on the Godfrey morning show-. From there, she went to Steve Allen's program and fame. TV had discovered her. Erin made so much news, that a well-known dramatic actress, Erin O'Brien Moore, demanded that Erin change her name.

"How can you force me to change my real name?" Erin asked justifiably. "My lucky break," says Erin, "was meetingJJberace. He talked his manager, Seymour Heller, into managing me. Since then, I've been off to the races." 0 via 1 i A ft C'ond vigorous SP i "Not Enough Experience" Heller turned down a six-month NBC-TV contract and submitted Erin for the lead in Warner Brothers' Marjorie Morningstar. "She doesn't have enough dramatic experience to play Morningstar," said director George Cukor, "but she's much too talented and beautiful not to be put under contract." Ironically, the very same people who had ignored Erin O'Brien before now signed her for leads in TV westerns (Co 45, Maverick and Cheyenne').

A few months later her salary mounted to $500 a week; she was awarded the movie role of Andy Griffith's college girl friend in OtiionheaJ; and Coral Records signed her to a contract. She has guested for top TV shows with George Gobel, Art Linkletter and Bob Hope. Erin O'Brien finally has made the grade. But, success has its price. For Erin, it is her singer husband Jim Fitzpatrick and their two sons.

This year between TV, stage, recording and motion pictures, she'll have little time with her "boys." "But in this business," manager Heller, "an entertainer's got to strike while the iron is hot. Beauty doesn't last forever, not even with the luck of the Irish." fl 3 1 958, John Morrell Red Heart Div. Tt it me 4 Protein!
