TIMES COLONIST Thursday June 3 1999 B5 CAPITAL REGION This area kept clean by merry maids Let us keep your area clean! 598-6243 Medical health officer wins national honour for clean-air campaign Dr. Richard Stanwick has received a national award for his role in creating the capital region's five-month-old clean-air bylaw. Stanwick, medical health officer for the region, was presented ith his award by Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada. "Because of Dr. Stanwick's leadership, the citizens of the (Capital Regional District) enjoy the highest level of protection against polluted air," said Dr.

Mark Taylor, president of the physicians' group. "This is the only municipal district in Canada to have built support for 100 percent smoke-free public places." Taylor said Stanwick is a longtime advocate of smoking controls and was instrumental in the multi-year process leading up to enactment of the bylaw on Jan. 1 The bylaw, the most comprehensive of its kind in Canada, bans smoking from virtually all indoor places except for private homes. Stanwick's award is named after the late Dr. Norman C.

Delarus, who has been called "the father of the Canadian medical profession's interest in smoking." Among the mem- bers are, left to right: Jenny Pike, Irene Lane, Dorothea Brooker and Delphine Large. Women's legion keeps growing Old boys club attitude in 1940s prompted females to branch out Delphine Large, also a member of the RCAF(WD) in the Second World War, said it was difficult for women returning from service to join legions in some places since the men would not let them in. "These women have gone and done their own thing," she said. "They don't have to rely on anyone else to give them a presence." Nita Walt, of the Canadian Women's Army Corps, said: "We think there is a need for the legion.

I heard when women joined the legions after the war they had to join the ladies auxiliary. The men would have none of it. It was a good old boys club." So, in 1945, 15 women in Victoria created their own branch. Now it is on equal footing with other branches and people outside the legions are learning the stories of women who served. "It's surprising people don't know there are women's branches," said Large.

Members are all over 70, one is 93, and they enjoy going out to schools to talk to classes about women's service: "There's a great reception," said Walt. "The girls are interested in our experiences." By Patrick Murphy Times Colonist staff For some women, the idea of joining a legion came because the men's legion would not have them. For others, it was to rekindle the comradeship of war. Today, Victoria's Branch 182 of the Royal Canadian Legion is one of only three or four exclusively female branches and while other legions are talking merger, this one is still growing. "We have 125 members," said Jenny Pike, a veteran of the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service in the Second World War.

"We get 50 out to meetings and even had a new application today." The legion was holding its monthly meeting at the Pro Patria Branch Legion on Gorge Road. "Most of us are widows now." Dorothea Brooker, also a former WRCNS, said it 1 is the fellowship that brings them together. "We come for the comradeship," said Gladys Drew, of the RCAF Women's Division. lj 'Townhouses from $39,900 'Houses from $54,900 STANDARD I-- DRYWALL Forum tackles issues facing young people Youth violence, drugs, poverty and child labour will be among the issues up for discussion tonight at a public Youth Town Hall Forum.
