State warns about lead in candy By The Associated Press WICHITA State health officials are investigating several cases of childhood lead poisoning in Kansas to see if there is any connection with chili-covered candies imported from Mexico.

Following warnings from the federal Food and Drug Administration, the state Department of Health and Environment this month warned people against eating Mexican candies, especially ones flavored with chili or tamarind. Federal officials have found high levels of lead in some of the candies, including lollipops dipped in chili or lemon and salt flavoring, and are working with Mexico to solve the problem. Health officials also have told consumers to watch out for candy wrappers using lead- based ink and ceramic containers that may leach lead into the candies. The FDA has said none of the lead amounts exceed federal limits of 0.5 parts per million, but the candy does contain more lead than sugar- based candy Because lead accumulates in the body, experts recommend avoiding even tiny amounts wherever possible. Exposure to lead can cause developmental problems in children.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is looking for the candies during annual Inspections of grocery stores. If a blast Drum and bugle corps impresses at practice By SHARON MONTAGUE Salina Jonnial Andrea Kirk grew up with the Silver Sabres Drum and Bugle Corps in Salina, and she worked with the Sky Riders while majoring in music at Hutchinson Community College in the late 1960s. So when she heard that the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps from Denver would be practicing in Salina, she gathered her sister and her nephews and made an afternoon of it.

"I've been trying to encourage the kids with their music," Kirk said. Kirk and her nephews Cameron, 11, Caleb, 10, and Cayden Colucci, 6, were impressed.

Cameron, who plays trumpet and will be in sixth grade next year at South Middle School, was ready to sign up for a stint with the corps. "They're pretty good," he said. They're also pretty dedicated. Josh Nelson, one of the percussion instructors for the 135-member corps, said the members practice every day They stopped in Salina on Sunday to rehearse in between a rained-out competition in Arkansas and one planned for Denver. They've been on the road for 12 days.

Nelson said, and plan to stay in Denver for a few days before going on a final, five-week tour. Nelson said corps members, ages 14 through 21, are from all over the world. The group even has a member from Japan. Members are selected through auditions, which are held one weekend a month from November through May Once members are selected, Nelson said, the group rehearses all day every day for two or three weeks before going on tour across the country for about two months. On Sunday the group rehearsed at Kansas Wesleyan University where they spent the night, before going to the soccer fields at the YMCA in the aftei'noon.

About 100 people had gathered there to watch the rehearsal by about 7 p.m. "In smaller towns, we usually draw bigger crowds," said Greg Kitto, another percussion instructor. One want-to-be was Stephanie Johannes, 15, daughter of Stuart Johannes, who is a former Silver Sabre member and now serves on the group's board of directors. "I want to hear them play" Johannes, a percussionist, said early Sunday afternoon.

"Music's always been a part of my life, and I love to play" Johannes was second-chair percussionist as a freshman at Salina South High School. "I was very happy with that," she said. She'd also be happy to someday be part of a drum and bugle corps even after being told of the strenuous Blue Knights rehearsal schedule. "I could picture that," she said, smiling and nodding her head. "Pretty awesome." Reporter Sharon Montague can be reached at 822-1411, or by e-mail at saljournal.com.
