They act as consultants to the principals, regular counsellors and teachers, helping them with the many problems that crop up during the school term. Their main concern is mental health both preventive work and in getting treatment for someone who needs it. Russell MacKenzie, program director, says the counsellors know how to identify children with problems and know the resources both in the school and in the community for assisting them.

The 700-hour training program is divided into two sections, academic courses or seminars and practical field experience. Academic courses cover public health, psychiatry, pediatrics, social work, sociology, anthropology, criminology, and so on. Top men and women in their fields serve as lecturers, and Mr. MacKenzie says the entire school system is being enriched as the counsellors are plowed into the schools every year. Mr.

MacKenzie said major secondary schools have several teacher counsellors, who spend part of their time in group guidance and counselling and in individual counselling, and the rest in leaching. These may apply for the advanced counselling service. The school board selects the best of these and four from other lower mainland schools who have been recommended by their district superintendents. The courses are held in a lecture room in the school board offices. The work, a sepia wash entitled Death of Jacob," was donated the museum 50 jears ago. in 18 By IAN MACDONALD Canadian Press Staff Writer By the time parents have finished cleaning up wrappings from the children's Christmas presents, Canadians will have spent an estimated $85,000,000 on toys during 1959. It is believed Canadians spend more money per capita on toys than any country in the world and the biggest buying splurge of the year now is under way. A Canadian Press cross-Canada survey shows that realistic missile launchers and other space age toys are the biggest Christmas sellers in five provinces. But Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia boys still prefer cowboy gear, while Nova Scotia and Newfoundland youngsters favor mechanical hockey games.

The only province where a drop in toy sales is noted is Saskatchewan. Two mail-order outlets, catering mainly to farmers, said the biggest decrease was in the northern part of the province. Businessmen blamed the recession on an October snowfall that made it impossible to harvest all the crops. Some Prince Albert area farming communities have bought nothing by mail order this Christmas. In other sections of Saskatche wan cowboy outfits were popular items for boys and dolls fo" girls, although city stores also reported a drop in sales.

Girls everywhere are sticking by their perennial favorites dolls and home-making kits such as sewing baskets, washing machines, small stoves and tea settings. The boys some girls too appear to be impressed by launching pads, including one with a complicated count-down indicator and another that sends a two-stage rocket, powered by a soda solution, zooming 300 feet. Other rockets have nose cones that are dropped by parachute. Vancouver, although still under the cowboy influence, reports a strong demand for rockets that can be hurtled hundreds of feet fn the air with water from a garden hose or air from a bicycle pump. SIZES DIFFER Most girls wouldnt trade dolls for any toy but they dont all agree on sizes.

Saint John, N.B., girls prefer small dolls with good wardrobes while Montreal girls like 21-36 inch dolls. Bride dolls complete with nylons and a dia' rnond engagement ring are popular in Nova Scotia for $9.95. Demand for mechanically-operated toys is high in almost every province. Hockey games are special favorites in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Saint John, Montreal, Quebec City, St. Johns and Halifax.

Some come comp 1 with flashing goal lights, an automatic face-off gimmick, a puck ejector and sell for about $12. Almost all provinces report boys still like electric trains. A 40-per-cent increase in the demand for books is reported in Vancouver. Were distributing more books than ever before," said one leading importer. Book sales are also heavy in Ottawa.

Vancouver also noted a swing toward educational toys such as construct 1 sets. Chemistry, physics and astronomy sets are popular with Ottawa boys.
