Wisconsin state Journal Monday, noveMber 26, 2018 A9 00 1 FROM PAGE ONE Aug. 1, 2003 Fourth bishop of Madison Robert Morlino is in- stalled as bishop of the Di- ocese of Madison, becoming the fourth bishop to lead the diocese since it was estab- lished in 1946. Morlino, born in Scranton, Pennsyl- vania, the same year the di- ocese was created, was ap- pointed by Pope John Paul II after four years heading the diocese of Helena, Mon- tana. He succeeded Bishop William Bullock, who re- tired after leading the dio- cese for 10 years. February 2004 public Morlino writes in the Catholic Herald newspaper that Madison appears to be a community that has high comfort level with virtually no public Mor- lino said the tolerance of abortion clinics and the welcome that civic author- ities give to anti-Catholic theater productions like which portrays Christ as a gay man, is evidence that Mad- ison has no strong sense of public morality.

November 2005 Institute for Security Cooperation Morlino joins a federal advisory board for the Western Hemisphere In- stitute for Security Coop- eration, a training facility for Latin American military leaders formerly known as the School of the Americas. Critics hold a 25-hour ses- sion of prayer and fasting. Morlino said his role was to advise Congress on how to correct problems at the facility. He serves on the board until 2009. March 14, 2005 Cathedral fire The 150-year-old St.

Raphael Cathedral in Downtown Madison is de- stroyed by fire. A mentally ill homeless man was later sentenced to 15 years in prison for setting the blaze. In 2007, Morlino announces plans to build a cathedral on the site. The project is estimated to cost about $14 million and incorporates a $1 million steeple that had been installed just months before the fire. Nov.

5, 2006 Same- sex marriage The weekend before elec- tion day, Morlino orders all priests to play, without comment, a recorded mes- sage from him at Mass in which he voiced opposition to same-sex marriage, the death penalty and embry- onic stem-cell research, all ballot-related issues. Some parishioners walk out or stand with their backs to the altar when the message is played. The next month Morlino receives a lifetime achievement award for promotion of freedom of speech and religion by the national Alliance for Mar- riage and Congress of Racial Equality for his vocal oppo- sition to a same-sex mar- riage ballot amendment. April 4, 2008 Cathedral plans on hold Citing a poor economy and a desire to convince more people it was needed, Morlino shelves plans for a new cathedral. In 2012 the diocese turns the site into a park featuring a walk- ing path commemorating final hours.

Nov. 27, 2012 Nuns banned Morlino bans two long- time Madison nuns and two other women connected to an interfaith spirituality center from providing spir- itual direction or guidance at any Catholic church in the diocese. According to Morlino they strayed too far from church teachings. Sept. 5, 2013 A stand on stem cells Morlino forbids about 7,400 children who attend Catholic schools in the Madison Catholic Diocese to take field trips to the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery because the fa- cility on the UW-Madison campus conducts research using embryonic stem cells.

Morlino serves as chairman of the National Catholic Bioethics Center.
