Alan Astbury, 55, who occupies the Pearce chair in physics at the University of Victoria, is known internation-ally for his investigation of sub-atomic particles of matter at institutions in Canada, the U.K., Europe and the U.S. He as a member of the team which was the first to collect and particles in major experiments at the CERN accelerator laboratory in Geneva in the early part of the decade. Roy Hyndman, 48, director of Pacific Geoscience Centre, is cited as "perhaps the most versatile of the younger geophysicists in Canada, widely known internationally." His work lately has involved measurements of physical properties of rock samples discovered by deep-diving researchers at spreading ridges of the oceanic plates some 150 nautical miles off Vancouver Island for Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. Both will become fellows of Academy III, the science sector of the society.
