So just imagine what, not just any common dimple, but the most famous dimple in Hollywood the one boldly indented on Kirk Douglas could bring? The name of First Choice was never uttered, but there was little doubt that Montreal movie mogul Harold Greenberg was hoping Ottawa would announce approval of his bid to take over the ailing ay-TV network as he was proudly presenting pal, usincss partner and good-luck charm Douglas to the media Tuesday at the posh Ritz Carlton Hotel downtown. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission's decision was not forthcoming, but if folk wisdom works, then Greenberg is a shoo-in. The 66-year-old Douglas, looking astonishingly youthful and trim, one might almost say wasp-waist-ed, was in the city to talk more movie business with Greenberg and to plug their first venture together, a Canadian-made Western called Drawl "There's only one thing Harold and I have in common he's rich and I'm poor is that we both love Westerns," said Douglas, speaking with the familiar machine-gun delivery that impressionists adore mimicking.

"I've wanted to make this movie for eight years. I wanted to make it with Burt Lancaster, but nobody wanted to do it. They said Westerns are dead." Shot last summer in Alberta, Draw! stars Douglas as a retired gunslinger named Harry Holland who, as happens with amazing regularity in the Westerns, is forced to have a showdown with his old nemesis, played by James Coburn. The movie proudly announces itself as being in the same company, style-wise, as those witty, offbeat Westerns CatBailou and Butch Cansidyand the Sundance Kid. Douglas and his son, actor and director Michael Douglas, watched a working print of Draw! on Sunday and evidently liked what they saw.

Reported Douglas, whose film-making company Bryna co-produced the film with Greenberg's Astral Bellevue Pathe: "We're quite excited by this business of making films in Canada." He noted that he had recently starred in the Australian Western, The Man from Snowy River, based on a popular Australian epic poem, thus helping to bring the movie to world attention. He said there had been a lot of opposition in Australia to his casting, but that very often one ran across "this provincial point of view." Hollywood invited foreign talent to work there and, the actor suggested, the rest of the world should do likewise. Asked what precisely would strike viewers as being Canadian in Draw! the action is situated in a town called Bell City across the Mexican border Douglas seemed momentarily stumped. "I don't know if they're going to look at something YLL1 MT -rOWEURIVlR TO OBTAIN THE AUCTION BROCHURE CALL 273-4411 (Vancouver) or 384-0323 (Victoria) The condos will be open weekends from November 11th until the day of the Auction from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. (or by appointment).

Douglas: "Love me or hate me" and say, 'That's he replied, adding that the United States and Canada had one thing in common they were nations founded by immigrants. "I love that in Canada those squabbles you have occasionally between the French and the English." That choice remark elicited a combination of chuckles and low groans from the French and English-speaking entertainment media people. Douglas's own parents were Russian Jews and the actor was born in New York as Issur Daniclovitch Demsky. Some of Douglas' Hollywood detractors have suggested that his Russian strain is responsible for a formidable and arrogant personality which once earned him Photoplay magazine's accolade as "the most hated man in Hollywood." He recalled that after he won an Academy Award nomination for his role as the cynical boxer in the 1917 movie Champion, powerful Hollywood gosssip columnist Hedda Hopper accused him of turning into a "son-of-a-bitch." "I told her, Hedda, I was a son-of-a-bitch before Champion. You just never noticed "Love me or hate me, just don't be blah about me," was Douglas' friendly parting shot to the media.
