The Pringle Column by Martin Melhuish For release Aug. 188$ One of the biggest banes of the recording industry has always been the counterfeiting of records and tapes in which neither the record companies or the artists receive their rightful share of royalties from the copyrighted 'music. These days it is almost impossible to detect the bogus records and tapes, so professional have the counterfeiters become but WEA, Atlantic and Rolling Stones Records have come up with a system that they feel will go a long way in discouraging any would-be counterfeiters. The new LP by the Rolling Stones, Emotional Rescue, contains a special, undetectable device that will make the legitimate product stand out from counterfeit copies. According to Sheldon Vogel, an executive from Atlantic Records, the device that is built into the new Rolling Stones records and tapes can only be detected by record company personnel with no obvious markings that could be seen by record store employees or the general public. The idea is for the company to make a spot check at record and tape outlets on a regular basis to uncover bogus copies of the albums and tapes. Billy Joel is making quite a few surprise appearances at small clubs these days in between his large area dates and at all of these impromptu concerts producer Phil Ramone has been seen manning the remote recording equipment. After his performance at the Montreal Forum recently, he dropped into Boston for a two-night stand at the Paradise where his show was recorded. Ramone was also very much in evidence at the recording console during Joel's five-night stand at new York's Madison Square Garden where he sold out in record time and received the Gold Ticket Award from Madison Square Garden's President Mike Burke for drawing over 100,000 people. So what's the story on all this live recording? Can we expect a live LP from Mr. Joel? Well, Billy's not letting the cat out of the bag if that is in fact what he has in mind. He's postponed part two of his tour which includes dates in Canada, California and the Southwestern U.S. to work on...we're not sure what but it's all very hush-hush. In the meantime, Joel's current album is closing in on the three million sales mark and all of his concerts have sold-out in advance. Wonder if his mother still asks him when he's going to get a regular job! While we're talking about producer Phil Ramone, his latest project with Paul Simon, with whom he has been closely associated for many years, is set for release. The album entitled One-Trick Pony is Simon's first release for Warner Brothers Records, the label he signed with after severing his longtime ties with CBS. the LP Is actually the soundtrack of a film entitled One Trick Pony for which Simon wrote the screenplay and stars as fictional rock musician Jonah Levin. The movie, which opens worldwide in October of this year, features all new music composed and performed by Simon and he has indicated that he plans a concert tour to support the film and record. CIV C V ah ah a a dh s s s s , iy- i ' Chicago is preparing for an extensive tour at the end of August to introduce the people to their new LP Chicago XIV and their new guitar player Chris Pinnkk who recently replaced Donnle D&cus. Danny Seraphine of the band indicates that the scund of the band on the new album will remind peopls of Chicago's first album and credits the band's producer Tom Dowd for the rejuvenation. Robert Palmer fans will be glad to hear that his new album Clues will be available in the stores soon. It's just like Palmer to throw us a musical twist and this time it's in the form of an unlikely songwriting partner Gary Noman. Numan, I'm sure you will remember, recently had a big hit with a single entitled Cars from the LP Pleasure Principle which was awash with synthesized keyboards and paranoid lyrics. The album, which was produced by Palmer, contains three-songs that were either written or co-written by Numan. One of the highlights of the album is Palmer's version of the Pretenders song Kid which he has been performing in concert for quite a while now. Some people are natural athletes and others, well they're usually in the chiropractic wing of the local hospital with their feet tap after just stepping onto a playing field. Gregg Rolle of Journey picked up a souvenir from a Softball game that the band played against a Denver radio station in the form of a leg cast for a broken ankle. Journey is in the middle of an extensive North American tour and in the old show biz tradition, the shows are going on!
