'Wl I 1 IELD and STREAM By EARL GOLDING By now mint fleer hunters have their leases for the up coming season and are now counting dovv'n the days between now and opening day Some like Blok Oliver will be back on the same places hunted for several years nick hunts in Leon County anil Is grumbling Irs'causo right across the river in Robertson it opens on Nov 14 while he has to wait until Nov lit Others like Ken Wall will be on new leases or tho first time Ken and bls hunting partners will be in Bosque County this November A few hunters like Rob ert Mull! still need places to hunt Robert would like to find a lease in reestone County where the venison search kicks off Nov 1 if you arc a hunter and have an opening on your lease let us know If you are a landowner and have a good lease still to be filled drop us a card with complete details pass It along to sportsmen estill looking The Best Hunt Ever Had think we're going to have a good hunt" Obe Thomp son said "there are a lot of birds" Which I thought was a statement that branded the drawling Spring Valley rancher as somewhat of an optimist Because here it was the sixth day of the season and usually by the sixth day the birds have gone thataway But Obe insisted we'd see more than enough of the streak ing grey darts to keep us busy And sizing up the crowd which had gathered for this aft ernoon shoot we deducted it would take quite a number of birds to offer sport Planned only the day before when my brother in law Roy Purczinsky had come in from Missouri 1he hunt had now gathered up eight guns Obe had his 12 we noticed instead of the 28 used the last time we'd hunted together His son little Phil had a single shot 20 and was hoping to bring down his first dove with it Roy and I and my brother Jackie were there Bill Markum and his son Mike had come from Waco And Bobby Mote of Plain view was there Chuck Purczinsky and Randall Markum are still too small to shoot but they were ready to gather up when their daddies dropped 'em waited until 5 to start partly due to the heat and partly to the fact that the birds had been coming in late since the season first opened And it didn't take us long to find out what kind of hunt we were going to have on this day 1 i JMk Jb 11 1 if It i If Sv i I All HAPPY HUNTERS Our party poses for group picture after "the greatest dove hunt we've ever had" last week end In the front row left to right are bird retrievers Randall Markum and Chuck Purczinsky and Phil Thompson who used a 20 gauge sin gle shot to bag the first five birds he'd ever dropped Standing left to right are Mike Markum and Bill Mar kum of Waco Roy Purczinsky of Trenton Mo Obe Thompson of Spring Valley Bobby Mote of Plain view and Jackie Golding of Lorena Limits fell in an hour's time and the skies were literally full of the grey darts See "ield and Stream" (Earl Golding Photo) Doves Were lying Everywhere As we walked through the pasture we could immediately see birds flying into the big lake around which we were to hunt And when we came down the hill and approached the lake we saw them everywhere rom all around the water line doves started getting up and flying And at the far end they were coming over the dam in flights of 10 and 12 Wc could look above the mesquite trees surrounding the upper end of the lake and see them whizzing in toward us in sin gles pairs trios and in gobs Some flights had as many as six to 10 birds And they were flying constantly Hunters slipped shells into guns and the volley began We were all firing all eight of us Roy stopped on the slope leading to the lake a good 40 yards from the shoreline and swung on the first bird to come over It crumpled and fell He went on to get five birds for the first five shots he fired Bill and Mike Markum came down the slope on the left side of the lake and their big 12s knocked birds out of the air Jackie was above them getting doves out of the grey formations which came in from the side of the dam On the other side of Roy Bobby Mote and I were shooting and above us Obe and little Thompson had taken cover in a mesquite clump and were blasting away It didn take long for Phil to make history His single 20 barked and his first dove ever folded up and streaked to earth 50 60 and 70 Birds at a Time It was unbelievably fabulous They kept coming by the dozens and dozens and dozens The great concentration of birds which had dumb founded us for awhile when we first walked up on them never slacked off I know how many doves we saw on this day but using the word do it We often saw as many as 50 or 60 or maybe 70 coming in around the lake at once And there was seldom a time when somebody cither shooting at a bird or getting ready to shoot as the next bunch approached In an hour we had our limits and it would have been earlier than that but for the fact so much time was spent wandering among the tall undergrowth looking for fallen birds At one time in our area alone I had one bird lost Roy had two and Bobby had three not going to shoot an other Bobby grumbled "until I find these It made for some long searching trying to find them aft er fallen But by 6 gathered them up picked up the hulls and met back in a group to pick birds and exchange amazement at the number of birds seen Without an exception we all agreed never had a better hunt or seen as many doves Bobby Mote was philosophical as we packed up and head ed back to our cars "A hunt like he grinned "will do me a lot of good for a long long time" fr Sharply Curtailed Hunt or Antelope Ih is Year AUSTIN (SPL) A sharply curtailed antelope harvest allot ment for 1be Trans Pecos Pos sum Kingdom and Panhandle areas was announced by Wel dor Watson executive director for the Parks and Wildlife De partment Total permits for the season to be issued to the hunters by the landowners were placed at 814 compared to a total of 2486 for 1963 Watson disclosed that condi tions were so critical that at one time closing the season was considered particularly for the Trans Pecos Only buck antelope may be taken in the Panhandle and the Trans Pecos during the season opening Oct 3 in all three areas Trans Pecos and Possum King sum Kingdom hunting will continue through Oct 11 In the Panhandle the shoot will be con fined to four days beginning Oct 3 Only 50 doe antelope will be taken in the Possum Kingdom area which received an over all allotment of 200 permits The Trans Pecos will receive 284 buck permits handled by 22 landowners mainly in the Marfa area The Panhandle will receive 260 buck permits allocated in Dallam Hartley Moore Old ham Potter Carson Roberts Gray Ochiltree Lipscomb and Hutchinson counties Watson said Trans Pecos ante lope herds were decimated by "severely adverse weather con ditions in ebruary March and April which prevailed through out the summer" "The short age of spring he said "drastically curtailed fawn pro duction and caused considerable mortality among the adult ante He said Trans Pecos antelope herds totaled 8074 head in 1963 but the numbers were reduced to less than 5000 by the barren ranges Texas Water Safari Will Be Longer SAN MARCOS (SPL) The Texas Water Safari will be longer and richer next year ac cording to two decisions made in San Marcos this week The first decision made by the Texas Water Safari Assn was to turn north instead of south when reaching the Texas coast Race planners decided to accept an invitation to end the race in reeport rather than in Corpus Christi the finish line for the past two years The second decision almost doubled the cash prizes over that of the last race as the Brazosport and the San Marcos Chambers of Commerce each pledged at least $1500 to go to the winners The top three win ners of the race earlier this year received a total of $1750 Smith manager of the Brazosport Chamber said that a committee of himself Ray mond Muchowich owner of Party Boats Inc and James Neighbors publisher of the Braz osport acts would go to work immediately to plan a gala re ception for the finish of the race and also to obtain prizes for the winners "We want to make this our top shelf Smith add ed and added that the would probably fly to San Mar cos in the near future to dis cuss further plans for the race next April 24 May 2 Race chairman Tom Webb sailed a portion of the proposed route from Seadrift to reeport in a olbot this past weekend before making the decision to turn the race nortli up the Texas cost The new route will add 45 miles and a day to the race The saltwater leg will be 120 miles north to reeport rather than the 75 miles south to Cor pus Christi A breakdown of the new route shows about 85 miles of open bays including big Mat agorda Bay and 35 miles in canals "The longer route will give us a more balanced race" Webb pointed out will take more of the advantage away from those that concentrate on the river portion of the race" SOLUNAR TABLES A A Minor Sunday 10:45 Monday 11:30 Tuesday Wednesday 12:45 Dang it he thinks as he makes a run for a cedar limb he got fooled It was plastic and it did have a No 3 hook in it By then though It Is too late and up there in a flat bottomed boat one fisher men Is tugging and winding on a red reel clamping his teeth and bug eyed In the other end of the boat i partner is doing a wild sort of Indian dance waving a landing net nervously and looking down there to see just how big this jargo Is going to be Things like this have been happening around here al ready You noticed of course that two of tho regulars who fished all summer suddenly found fall fishing on hand down on Belton I abor Day Jack Allen and Dr Jack Wcinblatt sack ed five bass which totaled 26 pounds using long slender slivers of red plastic hiding strong sharp hooks And Ed Henry of Waco had enough excitement on the lake over the weekend to find some encouragement "It hxiks" the big man said "like Belton is coming back" Ed thought about that a sec ond and then grinned big "I hope so" he said "because I believe there ever was a better lake than Lake Bel ton No lake put out the big fish that that one did when it was right" And Cliff Holloway of Mc Gregor tells me he thinks maybe he knows where the fish are In Belton right now So It is that time of year Maybe Belton will come back Maybe this will be the fall when they do gang up and really give the fishermen a scuffle Maybe they won't But the point is that now is the time of year when a fish erman can become optimistic again Ry past experience he knows that his chances are getting better every time the day gets a little shorter and the temperature drops another degree So he gets out his tackle box and looks it over and decides he's ready to increase I fishing calendar a bit But if he's a man who also thrills to the sight of a dozen whistle winged doves coming over the rise of stock tank dam and heading right for him he's got a decision to make go fishing or go dove hunt ing?
