The difference is that the top Is attached to a plate with rubber grummets that release when pressure is too great. Eight grummets are used for youth league bases, 12 for teen leagues, 16 for adult leagues and 20 for advanced or professional players.

The higher the number of grommets, the tighter the base is held. When a base separates, the rubber plate remains to mark the original spot of the bag. Hall includes a rule suggestion for umpires with each set of bases. "If the basetop should become dislodged from the base plate during live play, the base plate becomes the actual base for the rendering of the umpire's decision," his instructions read. The Fayetteville (N.C.) Generals, a Class A team of the Detroit Tigers, installed the bases last year.

"I think that as contracts go up and up and the investment in a player goes up and up, injury prevention tools are going to get more of a look than they ever have before," said Matt Perry, the Generals' general manager. Roger Hall, a former baseball coach at an American college, is the developer of the Rogers Breakaway Base, a big league lookalike that detaches when baserunners risk injury on a slide that's too fast or too poor.

"I imagine in 20 years, when my patent runs out, everyone will be using this base," Hall said. A university study found Hall's base reduced injuries 96 per cent during a three-year test, and a sports medicine group found even better results among minor-league teams. Still, Hall is finding the big leagues balking at his safety feature. "It happens every day; someone gets busted up," Hall said. "You have pro players getting hurt under ideal conditions, and then you have millions of Americans playing ball on potholed fields." The U.S.

Centre for Disease Control found more than 1.7 million sliding injuries occur each year, with 360,000 requiring a hospital visit. Outlawing sliding would be impossible and instructing millions of players on safe sliding would be impractical, said the centre. It recommended modifying bases. Desmond Haynes and Richie Richardson steered the tourists to their target of 115 with ease on the final morning after resuming at 20 for one, Haynes finishing on 57 and Richardson 52. Both had their moments of luck, though, Richardson edging Phillip DeFreitas over the top of second slip for four in the fourth over of the final day, and Haynes having two escapes against both DeFreitas and David Lawrence.

Inexplicably, England captain Graham Gooch had just two slips posted for Lawrence when Haynes edged an uncontrolled drive at catchable height through where a third slip would have been. Then the West Indies opener mi-shooked DeFreitas inches over the outstretched hand of Derek Pringle at mid-on. When Haynes reached 40, he completed 2,000 runs in Tests against England. His final score took 97 balls and included six fours. Richardson's innings also featured six boundaries, but came off 100 balls.

They reached the magic figure of 115 four balls before lunch, Richardson completing victory by turning Lawrence for two runs. The West Indies, which five days ago was quoted at 7-4 to win the series, was immediately installed as 8-11 favorites, while England's odds dropped from 3-1 to 5-1. Former England batsman David Lloyd named West Indies' fast bowler Curtly Ambrose as man-of-the-match for his eight wickets in the Test. The fourth Test begins at Edgbas-ton on July 25. OB The Canadian Press MEDICINE HAT, Alta. The Calgary Flames of the NHL have decided to take a chance on Mark Woolf, a talented hockey player with a drinking problem. Woolf was scratched from the Memorial Cup major junior hockey final in May by head coach Bryan Maxwell of the Spokane Chiefs because he broke a no-alcohol rule. The Chiefs won the game 5-1. The 20-year-old right winger from Redcliff, had been a discipline problem before.

The Chiefs suspended him near the end of the Western Hockey League season for curfew violations involving alcohol. During the summer Woolf began attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in Medicine Hat and is taking counselling. On Monday he signed a tryout con tract with the Flames. "I'm happy," Woolf said. "It's close to home and close to my agent!" Woolf is represented by Art Breeze of Calgary-based Pro-Rep Entertainment Consulting Group Inc.

been my buddy," Woolf said. "He's been more than an agent to me." Woolf, who had 41 goals and 90 points in 67 regular-season games with the Chiefs, was originally drafted by the Boston Bruins last year. The Bruins recently released him. "Calgary offered a tryout contract with a prenegotiated NHL contract based on performance," Breeze said. "It's an enormous opportunity for Mark and further evidence of the progressive attitude of the Flames." "I've done a lot of growing up," Wfiolf said.
