I- vr SASKATOON ilAl-PHOENlX, FRIDAY, JULY it, 1M AOS rwurrf i HELP WTD. (Male-Female) IS (Centimes') FEMALE HELP WANTED 1J (Centime) STRICTLY BUSINESS By MacFeatters Sheep to Israel Mailer Explains Why Large Amount Liquor On Arctic Palrol Ship posed that waj specially needed OTTAWA (CP) The amount of Iquor shipped on board the fed-ral Arctic patrol ship C. D. Howe In last ummer'g cruise "does leem rather large." Transport Minister Marler said Thursday, But ttore are a number of ex-ilanatory factors, including the dumber of passengers and the na-ure of the voyage, he informed Commons. Mr.

Marler was replying to op- ijosition criticisms of the fact that too dozen cans of beer and 66 liases of liquor, all duty-free, were Shipped on board last year, none tvas returned after the three-month cruise through the eastern Arctic. He said the ship's crew varied from 63 to 76 persons. When she left Quebec City she had 32 pas sengers and during the trip there ere as many as 104 additional passengers. Mr. Marler alsd remarked that passengers wouldn't have much to becupy them on a northern cruise and there would be "greater op portunity for cocktail hours." A DRY SUMMER This year, however, the captain pad been told not to take aboard alcohol for the benefit of passer ers.

"It does promise to be a dry tummer. he said. A government report Wednesday laid that besides the beer last tear there was one case of creme fle menthe, 13 cases of scotch, 32 of rum. five of rye. eight of gin five of cognac and two of liqueur, Harold Winch (CCF Vancouver East) noted Wednesday night that tme of the liqueur cases was Southern Comfort and said he sup Rough Voyage Was Scheduled As "Luxury Cruise" SAN PEDRO, Calif.

(AP)-The' steamship Mazatlan rested her lull In a drydock Thursday after a 30-day cruise that started as a luxury trip and ended with passengers subsisting on pancakes 6nd rations from lifeboats. There were 172 passengers at Ihe start of the trip but only three rode out the voyage on the 375-foot vessel. The others found other ways to get home. The Mazatlan apparently wasn't tneant to ply Pacific waters along southern California and Mexico, anyway. Christened the S.S.

Alaska the ship had been in service in the far north for about 30 years. As for the Mazatlan, her troubles began shortly after she left San Diego on the voyage to Acapuico Mexico. At one time she was helplessly adrift for 20 hours. She was reported sunk. The propeller was bent when she ran over a buoy in the north.

I Mr. Marler also commented on a story In the Vancouver Sun by Stanley Burke, now parliamentary correspondent for The bun, who travelled on board the C. D. Howe for part of her cruise last year. The story said the vessel was dirty, inefficient and manned by political appointees, few of whom had sea experience.

Mr. Marler said Mr. Burke joined the ship in the midst of its northern operation of supplying carco to Arctic posts, and not when it sailed from port in spic and-SDan condition. He said the ship's crew has Deen together a number of Each year new appointments were made only to fill vacancies, ine marine aeent at Quebec Lity was res nonsible for hiring and he and the ship's captain were responsible for seeing that all had necessary quai' ifications. The captain could re ject any men on that ground.

It was a fact that recommenaa tions for prospective crew menv bers were made from time to time by members of Parliament. Mr. Marler added. He ma not warn members to think that an MP's recommendation "should be regarded as a handicap." The marine agent had been told this year to place first importance on capabilities of the men he hires. As for efficiency, Mr.

Marler quoted the report of an unnamed RCMP officers, a veteran oi tne Arctic, who had been on board and who said the C. D. Howe compared favorably in cleanliness and efficiency with other northern ships he had been on. Ends, chain. The galley caught fire.

Two fires were started in mattresses of passengers. On the Alaska run it was nice that staterooms were built close to boiler rooms to ward off wintry blasts. When the ship hit 120-degree heat off lower California, it was not so nice. And there was no air conditioning. Virginia Snow, a newspaper woman from Mexico City and one of three passengers who stuck with the ship until it reached here, told of the ship's troubles.

The Mazatlan was held in one Mexican port for six days until money was advanced from los An geles to pay repair bills. On the return trip from Acapuico the ship was out of potatoes, but ter, vegetables and meats. Finally, Miss Snow reported, the menu dwindled to a steady diet of pancakes. On the last day emergency food kits in lifeboats were opened, Chemicals in which Lithium Corporation of America held con trolling interest. The subsidiary now has been liquidated.

The company was reported to have spent about $200,000 in preliminary development before with drawing when the utility board held up sale of its stock. Lithium Corporation still holds the properties. Mr. Greenlay said his department would do all it could to speed development of the Lithium de posits. -4 Toronto Boy, 9, Falls 120 Feet, Arm Broken TORONTO (CP) A nine-year old boy plunged 120 feet down sub- urban S'larboro bluffs Thursday and only suffered a broken arm Martyn Featherby was taken to hospital for treatment after pouce firemen and nearby residents com bined their efforts to rescue the boy.

They strapped him to a to boggan and hauled him up the cliff. "He was standing on some slippery clay at the edge of the cliff and he just went down, said iNigei Field, 8, who was playing with Martyn in a field at the bluff edge. Aircraft Storage Rates Protested OTTAWA (CP)-Boost in rates for storage of private aircraft jn hangars owned by the transport department was protested Thurs day night In the Commons. i Walter Dinsdale (PC Brandon Souris said the rates are so high they will reduce the ability of priv ate citizens to operate their own aircrat.
