They are protesting against alleged housing discrimination in the all-white Cragin neighborhood, a pleasant middle-class area of owner-occupied homes. Civil rights leaders say Negroes are not permitted to buy or rent homes there.

CHICAGO (AP) A line of 1,500 civil rights demonstrators inarched in the rain through volleys of rocks, cherry bombs and bottles Sunday to kneel and pray in front of two churches in an all-white neighborhood on Chicagos northwest side. The marchers, Negro and white, held prayer vigils at Chicago has an open occupancy law and Governor Otto Kerner has issued an executive order forbidding real estate agents from discriminating in the sale or rental cf housing. The order is being appealed in courts. The disturbances decreased after 1,100 policemen clashed with several of the thousands of white persons lining the streets when the procession left Hanson Park. The policemen, many trained in riot control, waded into the crowd time after time, clubs swinging.

The marchers trudged slowly on as the missiles smashed into their midst. Priests and nuns were among the marchers. Police cars moved through the area, loudspeakers warning that any one arrested could be fined $500 or jailed, or both, under the state's mob acticn law. The march was stopped several times at the beginning while police charged into hostile groups. Four white persons were seized and hustled away.

One white man was carried to a squad car unconscious, blocd streaming from his head. They (the white residents) are after us, not the demonstrators, a policeman said. Gangs of white youths preceded the marchers, throwing cherry bombs, rocks and bottles at the demonstrators and police. It was the third time in a week the demonstrators had marched into the Cragin area. iswii Hanoi ack-ack downs 7 planes FALLS CITY, Neb.

(AP) Sheathed in flames, a jet airliner plunged to earth near this southeast Nebraska town late Saturday night, killing all 42 persons aboard. Only a little of the scorched and twisted wreckage was visible above the waist-high soybeans in the field where the plane crashed. Witnesses said the plane was encased in flames when it came out of a low cloud and slammed Into the muddy, sloping field. Bodies some burned and mangled were scattered around the site, but investigators said most of the plane apparently remained in a compact mass. The plane was Braniff International Ait ways flight 250 on a run from New Orleans to Minneapolis.

The aircraft was a BAC One-II, a twin-jet rear-engine plane built by British Aircraft Corp. and capable of carrying 63 persons. A Civil Aeronautics Board spokesman said it was the first fatal crash involving a BAC One-11 in the United States. At daybreak members of the Nebraska National Guard began hauling bodies to a temporary morgue in Prichard auditorium at Fails City, about eight miles to the Nebraska highway patrolman Marvin Gifford said he saw a big bail of fire in the air as he pursued a speeding truck. Antone Schawang, owner of the five-acre field in which the plane crashed, said the sky seemed to light up.

The farmer told of seeing the plane, with only one wing protruding from its sheath of flame, break from a low cloud, rip into the field and explode about 450 feet north of the farmhouse. -Farmer Milton Bauman, who lives about a mile away, said the explosion shook windows in his house. The crash came only about 15 minutes before the plane was scheduled at Omahas Eppley Airfield. Residents of the area said there was a thunder and lightning storm just before the crash. A heavy rain drenched the area afterward.

Braniff said the plane carried four crew members and 38 passengers. SAIGON (AP) Seven American planes were shot down over North Viet Nam Sunday, the highest toll of the air war, U.S. military officials announced today. The officials reported Sunday that six aircraft were brought down by Communist ground fire and two of the eight flyers were rescued. Monday, they added that a reconnaissance plane, had disappeared, northwest of Hanoi during a photographic mission.

The pilot was reported missing. The biggest previous singleday loss of U.S. aircraft over North Viet Nam was six Aug. 13, 1965. Most of the planes were shot down in the Hanoi Haiphong complex, where the Communists have established strong anti-aircraft defences.

A military spokesman said the number of raiding planes was not unusually' high but that good weather may have helped the anti-aircraft gunners find their targets. Pekings New China news agency said in a dispatch from Hanoi some of the pilots were captured. No planes were reported lost the previous week. The total announced lost over North Viet Nam is now 326. Although ground action was reported light, U.S.

headquarters disclosed the beginning of a new sweep in the far north by several thousand American and South Vietnamese marines. The new operation, code-named Colorado, began Saturday in Quang Tin province 30 miles northwest of the big marine camp at Chu Lai.
