It'is a case of love at first sight. Level-headed Betty is swept off her feet, and Jack realises that at last he has found the girl of his dreams. But Jack was already engaged to be married to April Moore, an exceedingly pretty and shrewd young lady, who had definitely marked Jacks fortune as well as his person for her own. The one weak spot in Aprils armor is her genuine, if selfish affection for Charlie Davon, an unscrupulous man of the world, who is not ashamed to make April borrow from her fiance to pay his debts. When April discloses herself, and poor little Betty finds that her first love is apparently false, she leaves her Aunt and her beloved country lanes and goes to visit friends in New York, in the hope of forgetting her sorrows in a round of gaiety.

At every turn she runs into April and Jack and Charlie Davon. Jack finds ample evidences of Aprils treachery, but as April has announced that she will not give him up he is A mysterious notice in a newspaper that Jack has failed in business and is in bankruptcy appears the very morning that a letter from April arrives breaking her engagement. It is not until later in the day that Jack connects the two items and wonders where April got her advance mistaken information. He wastes little time in wondering, however, for now he may claim Betty, and the happiness of the lovers is complete for a little while. How Jack is suddenly called to New York on business, how his love letters fail to reach Betty, how Betty is tricked into going to April's flat, where she thinks she overhears Jack making love to April, how Jack meets with a serious accident and lies in a hospital deliriously calling for Betty Cordon, how April passes herself off as Betty and poses as Jacks fiancee are a few of the many incidents that complicate the lives of these young people, and that will be followed eagerly and sympathetically by readers.
