Students Of 24 Greater Pittston Parishes Will Be Served By Seton Central Catholic High School Rev. Joseph Super Named As SUNDAY DISPATCH, JUNE 27, 1976 President Of Board Of Pastors IiW Diocese of Scranton 300 Uvoming cnuc Scranton Pennsivanta 18503 21, 1976 St. John the Evangelist High School, Pittston, has been designated a central Catholic high School by Most Rev. J. Carroll McCormick, D.D., Bishop of Scranton, and beginning September 1 of this year, the school will be known as Seton Catholic High School.

In a fetter to the 24 Roman Catholic parishes in Greater Pittston which the new central Catholic high school will serve Bishop McCormick said: "It is extremely important that all of us, bishops, priests, sisters, and faithful, do what we can to keep Catholic education available to as many children as possible. In this, we share a common obligation. Other schools may provide a fine secular education. Catholic schools, however, while still providing a fine secular education, teach their students what they should know about the existance of God, about His Church, and about His way to eternal salvation." The letter, in full, will be read at all the masses today in the is published here in its entirety. My dear People, After consulting with our Diocesan Superintendent of Schools and others, I have reached the conclusion that it would be proper at this time to designate Saint John's High School in Pittston as a central Catholic high school.

Accordingly, having obtained the approval of the Pastors concerned, I am placing the responsibility for the operation of this high school on the twenty-four parishes in the general area of Pittston, beginning September 1, 1976. The name of the school will be SETON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL. Thi3 name has been chosen to honor Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, an American who was canonized by Our Holy Father, Pope Paul VI, on September 14, 1975. She is credited with pioneering Catholic education in the United States following her conversion to our Church in 1805. This school will have as its Patron a Saint who was a heroic woman, a mother, a school teacher, an activp layworker and later, a foundress of a religious community of teaching Sisters, the Sisters of Charity.

She will serve as a model of virtue to be emulated by students and faculty. Mother Seton, as she was known, was a great American and a strong influence in bringing the love of Cod to countr leaa numbers of our fellow citizens. It ia extremely important that all of us, Bishop, Priests, Sisters and Faithful, do what we can to keep Catholic education available to as many children as possible. In this we share a common obligation. Other schools may provide a fine secular education.

Catholic schools, however, while still providing a fine secular education, teach their students what they should know about the existence of Cod, about His Church, and about His Way to eternal salvation. I urge the people of the parishes involved in this change to promote Catholic education in their midst and to give SETON CATHOLI HIGH CHOOL their wholehearted support. Asking Cod to bless you, I am 24 parish churches involved and PASTORS INVOLVED Rev. Joseph J. St Johns High School opened its doors for the first time in September, 1864 and the faculty consisted of a sister superior and four teaching sisters, member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The first school building was a three-story structure and was known as St John's Academy. The new academy and home for the Sisters was almost completed when Father Fmnen, the pastor and founder of the school died in February, 1899. Father Eugene Garvey was named to succeed Father Finnen and he united the parochial school and the academy with a charter being granted on March 17, 1900. The steadily increasing enrollment at St.

John's demanded a new, larger building and the cornerstone for the new school was laid by Bishop Hoban in October, 1920. That building presently houses St John's and after the fire on Fe bur ary 19, 1960, the structure was extensively renovated and new sections added.
