The city of Fruita has many historic aspects. Perhaps the most-widely publi- cizQd is the story of the chicken that wouldn't quit.

Mike the Headless Chicken has become a national legend. Mike was raised on the Olsen farm in Fruita. The fateful evening was Sept. 10, 1945. It was dinnertime and Mike's head went to the chopping block.

When the farmer swung the aic Mike's head went one way and his body the other. As do most decapitated chickens, he ruffled his feathers and ran around, hence the saying "running like a' chicken with your head cut off." But Mike stopped running, stood up straight, flapped his wings and tried to crow. It didn't come out quite the same. Mike's owner thought that it was unusual that Mike was still standing a few hours later. In disbelief, he called The Daily Sentinel to documept the event.

The story ran over the national news wire, and Mike was famous. Scientists investigated the phenomenon determining that Mike's brain stem was barely severed, sustaining his reflex actions. A blood clot stopped him from ing to death. Mike lived for another documented 18 months, touring around the country He finally died ftom choking on a piece of grain. His bewildering tale has drawn curiosity, and visitors to Pruita since its origin.

So became the celebration known as Mike Days. The fourth annual Mike the Headless Chicken Days in downtown Fruita was created to show the positive side of the legend, said Karen Leonhart, 43, recreation director for the city of Fruita. "We're not trying to be morbid," Leonhart said. "He just had a great spirit to live and that's the way we are taking it." The festival was.earlier this month. Each year there are several chicken-themed events, including the Run Like a Chicken With Your Head Cut Off 5K Fun Run, the rubber chicken bucket toss and the egg in spoon race.

Another popular event is the pet parade. The race is open to all pets of all ages. They are required to be dressed, humanely, like a chicken. There are also 40 vendors on site selling food, micro- brews and crafts. The reason behind the celebration may have come from an odd situation, but it's a chance to get the community together to have fun, Leonhart said.

Because neither Medicare nor the majority of Medicare supplemental insurance plans provide prescription coverage, high prescription bills make it difficult for many older people to stretch their monthly budget to meet basic needs. Recently, several prescription drug companies announced programs to provide prescription discount cards to persons on Medicare who meet income guidelines, Some companies charge a set fee for a 30-day supply of prescription drugs, and other companies give a percentage discount.

To get the discounts, you must apply for a discount card and present it at a participating pharmacy Discounts apply only to the drugs manufactured by the specific drug companies. Sometimes your drug container will list the manufacturer, or you may have to ask your pharmacist what company makes the drugs you are Following is a list of drug companies who offer prescription drug discounts. Contact them at the number listed or visit their Web sites to get an application. Applications are short and easy to complete. Pfizer: 1-800-717-6005.

If you qualify, you pay $15 for a 30- day supply of drugs made by Pfizer. Annual income limits are $18,000 for a single person and $24,000 for a couple. Eli Lilly: 1-877-795-4559. It is quickest.to go to the Web site and iirint the application. Eight drug companies participate in the Together Rx discount card. Companies are Abbott Laboratories, AstraZeneca, Aventis, Bristol-Myers Sqtilbb, Glaxo- SmithKline, Janssen Pharmaceutical, Novartit and Ortho- McNeil. Companies allow a 20 percent to 40 percent discount on drugs.

Income limitations for the Together rS Card are $28,000 for single, and foi' cou' pies. Companies consider income as your adjusted gross income on federal tax return. That is line 33 on-your federal return. One requirement for all the discount cards is that you not have prescription insurance coverage. Some companies that sell Medicare supplemental health insurance'plans include a discount prescription card as a special feature.

These are; not prescription insurance cards. Only Medicare supplemental plans I and include prescription coverage. If you have insurance through a former employer, and it includes prescription drug coverage, you will not qualify for the discount cards. If you think you might qualify for any of the discount scription cSrds, get an applica-; tion, complete and return. The company will send you a card if you qualify.
