VICTORIA TIMES, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1978 1 7 SHILLINGS LOSES FINAL TO EBERTS GOLF ernie fedoruk KAMLOOPS Tony Eberts of Kamloops scored three in the third end Monday and went on to post an 8-5 win over Steve Skillings of Victoria in the final of a $25,000 curling bonspiel. Eberts' rink of Garnet Campbell, Donn Perkins and Norm Hellyer collected $10,000 dollars for the win. Skillings, Murray Walker, Rob Cummings and Kim Browning earned $5,000. The Victoria rink came out of the event and downed Brent Giles of North Vancouver 7-5 and Al Richards of Burnaby 5-4 in earlier Monday draws to qualify for the final. Eberts qualified by edging Frank Bailey of Calgary 6-5 and downing Gien Pierce of Burnaby, 13-4.

out their critics. Several coaches have complained that under the three-referee system, the most experienced official works the mid-court area and does not get a clear view of the action under the basket, where most off-the-ball fouls occur. Others, including New York's Willis Reed and Los Scoring has risen, by about 10 points per game. That may reflect the edge given to offensive players by the ban on hand checking. But free throws have accounted for 20.7 per cent of all points scored this season the exact same percentage as last year.

The changes are not with Leafs Trip Bucks Angeles' Jerry West, say the no-hand checking rule is only a step in the right direction and have called for even stricter prohibitons against incidental contact. Still others have their doubts about the three-referee setup because they feel the league does not have enough competent officials to fill out the required number of three-man crews. By the same token, others argue the extra official has made each referee's job that much easier by reducing their areas of responsibility. Three men can cover the court better than two, they say. NEW YORK (AP) Commissioner Larry O'Brien is convinced the move to three referees and enforcement of the prohibition on hand checking has had positive effects on play in the National Basketball Association this season. "We find that excessive roughness has declined sharply and the game has opened up," said O'Brien, who authorized a preliminary evaluation of those two major changes based on the first 100 games of the season. "Unquestionably, the changes are working out better than we could ever have anticipated this early in the season." When the changes were announced at a meeting last June of the league's board of governors, it Was feared the presence of an extra official, combined with tighter restrictions on defensive tactics, would turn the NBA game into a parade of fouls. Games would drag on and on as players marched from foul line to foul line the essence of the sport as a ballet of constant motion would be lost. Those fears have not been realized, a study made for the NBA by the Elias Sports Bureau and released this week would appear to show.

In the first 100 games of the 902-game regular season, an average total of 54.9 fouls were called on the two teams. That's an increase of just one foul per game from last year's average of 53.9. And the length of games has increased by only one minute to an average of two hours, five minutes, from last year's 2:04. ttCEnAit ":7. 658-8846 652-1777 HTZTi at i Hi hi' i i (Get your winter Michelins now!) New Golf Techniques Boost Dale's Chances The new and most obvious change in Dale Shaw is an attractive haircut. Not as obvious, but also new is an upright Bolf swing and new putting style that could make the 1979 Ladies Professional Golf Association tour a more interesting one for the campaigner from Victoria. It's not that the 1978 season was a poor one for the former Victoria women's champion. Although her official earnings for the year are just under $4,000, Dale Shaw regards her first full campaign as a professional tournament player "was a very good one." For the record, she made the cut in 21 of 27 tournaments entered and has a modest "in-the-money" streak that started after a late-summer miss in Detroit. Home for a winter vacation, Western Canada's only representative on the LPGA tour will leave at the end of the month to start preparations for the 1979 campaign.

"I spent more than I made," she said, "but it was a good year for me. I made the changes in my swing and putting style. It took a while, but I felt there ws a great improvement In my game. "Last year, my average round was between 75 and 78. This year the average went into the low 70s.

I had a couple of 69s, after the changes. Last year, I had a good round with two birdies. This year I've been averaging four or five a round. "It has been very statisfying and I've learned a great deal. Instead of worrying about bogeys, for example, I've worked harder on getting birdies.

The over-par scores are starting to disappear from my scorecards." The improvements, she said Monday, are due in part to from Lew Worsham and Richard Loughlin. Wor-sham, a former U.S. Open champion who "sort of adopted" Dale because of her friendship with his daughter, has concentrated his attention on grip, stance, sand shots and tournament thinking. Loughlin, a Long Island pro, changed Shaw's putting style and swing. "You know me," she laughed, "as an amateur, when wasn't I changing my swing? I developed a loop and then the low swing.

I had a chronic draw, and you can't play tournament golf that way. You have to hit the The new swing has added some extra distance to her driving not the longest on tour, but nor am I the More important. Dale feels she has learned how to get better positioning with her drives and long irons with the controlable fade. For Dale, the drastic change has been in putting. Because of Loughlin, she has forsaken the wrist stroke she has used for most of her golfing career for the "pendulum" swing.

"First tried it in Detroit and that's hen I didn't make the cut. But now that I've worked on it, I think my putting has improved greatly. The big thing I learned on tour is that weight is not nearly as important as line. I'm always on line and now that accuracy has started to creep into my chipping." And about putting and chipping. Dale feels the tour has destroyed one myth she held about men versus always heard that the one area in golf in which women were equal to men was in putting and chipping.

Don't you believe it. "At least that was the thinking until Nancy Lopez came along to show them it (sinking 20-footers) can be done. She's a magnificent putter Tournament golf also has altered Dale's thinking about consistency: "Last year I was rather consistent in the 75-78 'range and didn't make much money. This year I had some scores in the 80s after I made those changes but i also had a couple of 69s and quite a number in the very low 70s. More tour players would prefer to have one lousy tournament and one astounding good one.

You wind up with more cheques that way." And cheques are something the hometown golfers are hoping will come her way in 1979. SHORT CHIPS: Victoria professional Jim Rutledge picked up $1,300 for his ninth-place finish in last week's National Golfers of American tournament at Chandler, Ariz.
