Lots were purchased for the school garage building in 1930. In 1934, the Dayton schools became affiliated with the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. The contract to light the football field was issued in 1935, and the following year the construction of the gymnasium began. In 1937, the Dugat school was discontinued. The same year the Wolf Island School burned, and the children were transported to Dayton schools, I and for the present football field was purchased In 1939; and school cafeteria operation began in 1940, In 1941, $60,000 worth of bonds were voted for Impi ove- ments on the primary and elementary buildings.

Construction for the Colbert School included a five-room brick veneer building in 1948 and a combination gymnasium-auditorium in 1950. Also in 1950 land was purchased for the construction of Dayton High School. The present school tax office was constructed in 1951; and in 1952 the high school building was completed. The new football field was completed In 1954, with the cinder track being completed two years later. Since Dayton's fiftieth anniversary in 1958, there have been two additions to Dayton High School; and Stephen F.

Austin Elementary School has been added to the system. Five high school classrooms were added in 1967. The contract was let in January, 1968 for the onstruction of two classrooms to be completed by the beginning of the '68 school year. With these advancements-in th school system we are reminded that it is our great public school system, among all of our free institutions, that has been most responsible for preserving and extending our liberty, our prosperity, and our democratic way of life. Interest and support of out schools underscores our great heritage of freedom, which we must pass on to posterity if we are to maintain our free society.
