28-VICTORIA DAILY TIMES, SATURDAY, JANUARY 23, 1971 MASTER i Inclia Takes Measures To Preserve Wild-Life the Conservator of Forests, Junagadh Circle, Junagadh, for transportation and guides to accompany you into the forest. Department officials will also provide accommodation at the Forest Guest House at Sasan, which is comfortable and inexpensive, about $2.00 per day including meals. Entrance fee for viewing the animals is approximately $22.00, which includes the locating of the animals and supplying guides to accompany you. The Gir Sanctuary is 56 miles from Keshod where your plane will land after a one and one-lialf hour trip from Bombay. Gir is reached from Keshod by hired car, approximately 13 cents per mile for the use of a five passenger station wagon.

It is advisable however, to make prior arrangements for transport, again through the Forest Department. If interested in seeing rare wildlife while touring India, don't miss a visit to the Gir Sanctuary. sub-continent and to save this noble beast from extinction the Gir Forest sanctuary in Gujarat, I i a 's furthest western state, has been established. The Asiatic lion as found in India differs from his famous cousins in Africa. He is shorter, with a maximum length of about 9Va feet, and has a thinner, shorter mane.

He is essential a beast of the bush country and lives in families of seven or eight. Your lion will probably weigh between four and five hundred pounds, and has a life expectancy of about 30 years. NO COMPETITION People often think that the lion cannot hold its own against the tiger when living in the same area. In India however, the lion has not had to compete with the tiger over territory, since they do not enter the same kind of tree and grass forests. The season to see the lions in Gir begins soon after the rains, from December onwards.

For this memorable thrill of India, however, visit Gir between March and May when the grass is cut and the heat forces the animals into the open. About three hundred lions are preserved in Gir Forest sanctuary, where they may be seen and shot with camera only in their natural habitat. The visitor can see the families of lions at close quarters and in complete safety. You'll not be disappointed either, because Gir officials almost guarantee a lion will show himself. When you reach Gurparat, make arrangements through ASIAN LION in India's Gir Sanctuary differs from African counterpart in having thinner, shorter mane and shorter over-all length.

Papa Doc Says Son Next Chief By PETER HALL PORT AU PRINCE (AP) President Francois Duvalier says his 19-year-old son, Jean-Claude, not only will succeed him as chief of state of Haiti but as head of the "Duvalierist revolution of social and economic reform." Duvalier, the country doctor who has ruled Haiti for the last 13 years, made the announcement Friday in a half-hour nationally televised speech. Last November, when the 64-year-old Duvalier was ill, some foreign reports said he had suf fered a stroke and would not be able to hold office much longer. At the first of the year, Duva lier told the young people of Haiti that he had decided to give them political power, add ing that "when the time arrives. I will offer and propose a leader." An enthusiastic letter from the joint chiefs of staff, published in the French-language newspaper, nominated Jean-Claude as the individual most suited as that leader. PHONE 382-9168 India News Bureau In India, home of such animals as the great one-horned rhinoceros, Asian lion and spotted deer, none of which are found anywhere else in the world, the importance of preserving wild-life is particularly acute. Unrestricted hunting, and the cutting of forests to provide more land for urbanization, has resulted in the near extinction of some species of rare birds and animals. But India is now taking steps to reverse this trend. The Indian tiger, for example, had almost disappeared from India.

Hunting of this magnificent animal and export of his skin' is, however, now almost totally banned across the country. Likewise, the Indian lion had all but disappeared from this vast Fortune Found In Home UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio (UPI) Police discovered cash estimated at more than $200,000 hidden in the home of a prominent Ohio physician after the doctor was found shot to death in his kitchen. Bills ranging from $1 to $100 were found Thursday tucked away in drawers, hidden in boxes, stuffed under beds and sofas, and secreted in cubbyholes in the home of Dr. Jay B. Price, 70.

The money filled six large bank sacks three feet high. One estimate placed the amount at more than $200,000. The total had not been counted last Thursday night. Price, who was unmarried and lived in the house with two sisters, was found lying on the kitchen floor after the sisters were awakened by noises and a gunshot. Police Chief Donald Stehlik said he thought the killers were three robbers who held up Price's sister at the home 10 days ago and escaped with some jewels.
