Alice Lon is a singer, and if ever there was a television season all set up for girl singers, it is this one. The female vocalist with the Lawrence Welk band, appearing twice a week, 9 to 10 p.m. Sat urdays, and 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. Mondays, ABC-TV, Miss Lon has created a special niche for her self as Welk's "Champagne Lady." Her fan mail runs from 400 to 1500 letters a month. There is a popular Alice Lon fan club.

When the Welk organization makes per sonal appearance travels, a crowd of fans meets them at the airport and before Alice Lon gets off the plane, there is usually a chanting choi-us for "little Alice." While all this fame and applause is splendid, and still not quite believable to her, little Alice is not without further ambitions. She would put up no strenuous objections to having her own television show, as do so many of her sister singers. GREATEST AMBITION And her greatest ambition Is to appear in a musical on Broadway. "I'm going to do it one day," she said. "That's what I really want most.

You wait and see. I'll make it." A small, black-haired girl, five- foot-three inches tall, 107 pounds, thirtyish, whose great charm lies in her warm smile, Alice Lon is much more determined than she might appear. Take, for instance, the matter of her name, Born in i 1 the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clint Wyche, she was christened Alice Lon Wyche for a favorite aunt and uncle of her mother's.

"Aunt Alice and Uncle Lon were more like grandparents to me," she said. "When I was growing up, they were the great est people in the world, and I have always been happy I was named for them. NO NAME CHANGE When I became a professional singer, you can't imagine how many agents tried to make me change my name. They always said to me, 'With a name like Alice Lon, you'll never get any where. You're -beaten before you begin.

"Nothing could ever make me change it though. I've thought so often how proud they'd be if they were living now. Uncle Lon would be so pleased to hear his name being mentioned on television." Miss Lon, who was named the "Champagne Lady," after Welk had publicly auditioned about girls during the band's appearances at the Aragon Ballroom in Los Angeles, was actually chosen by the public. "When Lawrence Welk was looking for a vocalist, he had many of these girls sing with the band in the ballroom. After it was narrowed down to a couple of hundred, he had us on his local television show, and he asked the people to write a letter for the girl they liked best.

TEASED ABOUT FAN MAIL "I guess I got the most letters. He always teased me about the mail, said nobody could have that many relatives." Miss Lon joined the Welk organization four-and-a-half years ago, appearing for the first two years on Welk's local television show in Los Angeles, and for the past two-and-a-half years on the network TV shows. The mother of three sons, Bobby, 10, Clint, 8, and Larry, 7, she had been virtually retired as a singer at the time she went to work for Welk. "I'd been so busy at home looking after the boys I'd almost for gotten about the entertainment business," she said. "When I did that audition I was thinking in terms of doing one local television show a week.

Now, with rehearsals for the two network shows, appearances the Aragon Ballroom, recordings, interviews, fittings for clothes, she works seven days and several nights of every week. Her mail alone is quite a task. Every letter receives an answer and every member of the Alice Lon fan club will receive a Christmas card.

This is the same kind of personal-contact public relations which Welk himself has used to high degree and it has played no small part in his success. However, Miss Lon declared. that although she works with a secretary, and she has an excellent housekeeper, she has little time to squander on herself. "Theoretically, Wednesdays and Thursdays are my days off," she said, "but on these days, I spend as much time as I can with the kids. By some miracle, haven missed a Cub Scout meeting so far, and I manage to get to most of the PTA meetings.

VACATION IN TEXAS "And last summer we actually got to the beach on my days off. We had three weeks vacation and Lawrence went to Europe. So, honey, we went straight home to Texas." Actually, hard work and Alice Lon are well acquainted with each other. She started to take singing and dancing and piano lessons at the age of six, and by the time she was ten, she was singing on her own local radio show in Kil-gore. She spent her teens touring Texas with various theatrical and show groups, playing theaters, veterans' hospitals and benefits.

Later, she was a featured vo calist with Don NcNeill's Breakfast Club and was seen extensively on television in Chicago. It's a right far piece from Kilgore to Chicago to Los Angeles to na tionwide television fame, but Alice Lon seems to have an excellent sense of direction. From this jumping-off place, it isn't quite so far to a little tele vision show to call your own, nor even to a Broadway show. Little Alice, size 7, may be just the singer to pull it off. She's studied all the maps and the signposts and she's on her way.
