mmmmm As directed by Stanley Ho-Jan this performance provided an excellent opportunity to assess the divergencies in the same choir's performance of the same work under different conductors. The society has performed the Handel work on several previous occasions. The choir Is well versed in the style of oratorio and Mr. Hoban also; obviously, knows well whereof he conducts. But with these basic and essential factors accepted, other aspects claimed attention.

Chief contracts lay between the sheer drive the over-all dynamic brilliance of former renderings and the greater serenity, the more subtle color- ing of this one. Mr. Hoban's choice of tempo was more favorable to the choir's technical equipment, if a shade less exciting to the listener. SHOUTING AVOIDED As a result, tone quality did not harden at any point, there was less tendency to shout in the climaxes and words were clearer. Slightly more "bite" in the attack on certain choruses was desirable, but on the other hand, climactic effects were outstanding, particularly in such numbers as "For Unto Us a Child is Born," "All JVe Like Sheep," and "Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Gates." A quartet of Victoria sine-ers served as soloists with notable success.

All are well known through many major achievements and with this performance added considerably to their individual statures. Deeply satisfying were Ruth Champion and Eleanor Duff in the shared aria, "He Shall Feed His Flock," the former's "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth," and Miss Duff's "He Was Despised," as was Michael Rogers' "Comfort Ye," and i "Behold and See," and John Dunbar's splendidly controlled "Why Do the Nations." Richard Proudman at the organ gave excellent support throughout and was partnered with fair success by a string ensemble under leadership of James Fraser. Crosby Quartet Back in January HOLLYWOOD (AP) The four Crosby brothers will put their singing act together again in January, says Lindsay Crosby. Bing's sons broke up their act in Montreal last week and cancelled an engagement tonight at Palm Springs. Lindsay denied they were feuding.

He conceded they had a "beef in Canada, but nothing serious." He said the reason for tonight's cancellation is that Gary, oldest of the four, has a throat ailment.
