DESIGNER: jaSoN.hEtzEl@NwI.com siouxcityjournal.com sunday, october 21, 2012 a5 DAVE DREESZEN SIOUX CITY The long- term forecast for KCAU- Weather Ball looks good. The familiar sphere, which turns colors to re- flect changing weather conditions, will remain atop the Ho-Chunk Cen- tre, say the new owners of the downtown Sioux City building. Ho-Chunk Inc. and oth- er investors recently pur- chased the 10-story office tower at 600 Fourth St. Long known as the Terra Centre, the building was the headquarters for Terra Industries, which was ac- quired by rival fertilizer maker CF Industries in a hostile takeover in 2010.

The glass-clad struc- ture was renamed for Ho- Chunk, the Winnebago Tribe of eco- nomic development cor- poration. At a recent news con- ference where the name change was publicly un- veiled, Ho-Chunk CEO Lance Morgan offered as- surances the weather ball would stay put. was told nothing can happen to the weather Morgan quipped to the audience. high-definition skycam also will continue streaming video from high atop the building, said Mary Ann Johnson, general manager for the ABC affili- ate. The weather ball, which instantly shows if precipi- tation is expected, whether it will be warmer or colder, or if there is no change in sight, has been part of Sioux skyline for de- cades.

In the 1960s, KVTV, a forerunner to KCAU, put the sphere atop the Badge- row Building. The ball was taken down sometime during the 1970s, but KCAU resurrected it in 1995 on the Terra Centre. The station developed rhyming jingles to let view- ers know what weather conditions to expect when the ball changed colors. The sayings are as fol- lows: Red as fire the tem- perature is going higher. Changes to blue colder weather will ensue.

Glowing white pre- cipitation is in sight. Emerald green fore- cast says no change in scene.
