May 23, 1998 B-3 Nebraska Kool-Aid official state soft drink Bereuter, Christensen vote for border control OMAHA (AP) Nebraska A "yes" vote Thursday was a vote to authorize such deploy Aug. 8-15 Kool-Aid Week in Nebraska Republicans Doug Bereuter and Jon Christensen voted with the majority in a 288-132 roll call by which the U.S. House of Representatives voted to authorize the Pentagon to deploy troops along the U.S. -Mexican border to help in the battle against drugs and illegal ments.

Voting yes were 85 Democrats and 203 Republicans, including Bereuter and Christensen. Nebraskan Bill Barrett did not vote. Voting no were 117 Democrats, 14 Republicans and one independent. passed a bill giving the governor the ability to make official designations. He used the power to name the channel catfish the official state fish alter being lobbied by a group of fourth-graders from Valley Llemenlary School.

He was joined at the ceremony by the "Kool-Aid Man." "Welcome back to Nebraska, your birthplace," Nelson said to the person dressed as a large pitcher of what appeared to be cherry Kool-Aid. The drink was invented in the central Nebraska city of Hastings in 1927 by Edwin Perkins. No other state has an official soft drink, although six have milk as their state beverage.

While milk is known for building healthy bones and strong teeth, one of the main ingredients of Kool-Aid is sugar, known for causing cavities.
